MOVES are under way to save the forgotten 'Ring of Fire' which once protected Plymouth from a possible French invasion. The so-called Palmerston forts were built in the 1860s and 1870s in a chain stretching from Staddon in the east, through Crownhill in the centre to Tregantle in Cornwall. Some 17 forts and batteries were joined by a military road designed to allow troops to move behind cover when under attack.
