China 'to overtake US on science' in two years

www.bbc.co.uk

That is the conclusion of a major new study by the Royal Society, the UK's national science academy.

The country that invented the compass, gunpowder, paper and printing is set for a globally important comeback.

An analysis of published research - one of the key measures of scientific effort - reveals an "especially striking" rise by Chinese science.

The study, Knowledge, Networks and Nations, charts the challenge to the traditional dominance of the United States, Europe and Japan.

The figures are based on the papers published in recognised international journals listed by the S

Well this was a certainty for a few years now but who would of thought the advancement would be so quick?

The question is, is this due to Chinas staggering technological and industrial growth, or Americas apparent decline in the same?

I guess its an old ATS favourite to debate who is the worlds 'top dog' but if you read the article and compare it to the other threads listed it certainly seems the winds of change are blowing from the east.

Hey lnr42, fun avatar!

Anyway, I really don't think this is true... Not in terms of "military science" at least. They need to take into account the U.S. black ops programs. Those technologies are at least 20 years ahead of what you and I even know exist!

What makes you think Chinas arent as well?

They have a huge military budget and are even less restricted than the American forces (are supposed to be...).

ETA: Yea the avatars freaky aint it? lol

Thread title should be:China 'to overtake US on science' in two years publicly.

We have no idea what our military is hiding.

China is poised to 'overtake' the USA in virtually all categories within that time-frame.

China and their Ally Russia plan to jointly reign as the global supreme power following the planned collapse of the USA.

In order to get there will require a very deadly attack by proxies which will ultimately draw the USA into a very ugly war in the middle east.

The planned implosion, and ascension is nearing the final phase.

In my opinion, of course.

Are you trying to say that this is a good thing, a bad thing or are you just making topic? Just wondering.

We have no idea what any military is doing. And from what we have seen of recent USA military endeavours (unless you subscribe to the ridiculous HAARP/Japan theories or somesuch) they aint all that.

No opinion either way really...I'm English.

Just saw the news on the BBC and it seemed worthy of an ATS mention.

AFAIK teh Chinese military budget is assumed to be a lot smaller than the US one - but no by so much as it was.

And it is growing fast, being supported by a massively growing economy, is less restricted, is being backed by a lot more eduction in science, is using cheaper labour, and is less dogged by anti-science stupidity in society.

the Chicom party knows the value of science.

the American public distrusts science - moreso all the time environment.yale.edu...

Just look at where all the looney conspiracy theories come from or prosper - chemtrails, HAARP, Planet X, NWO, Nazi moon bases, reptilian overlords (OK - Icke is a Brit....but I imagine he makes most of his money from American followers...), creationism, global-warming "skepticism" - you name it, you can make money from it in the USA!

As Sagan says - "we" have created a society that is utterly reliant on technology for it's very survival, but we have made certain that the vast majority of that society has very little comprehension of that technology - ironically the internat has made "us" stupid.

Sorry to my American friends, but I'm telling my kids to learn Mandarin even as they strive to get scolarships to US universities (as my sister has done and at least 1 of my kids probably will) - take the money while it is on offer, but in 20-30-40 years it's not going to be the US where it is any more......

The OP's avatar is the most disturbing I've seen on ATS yet.

As for my previous post, don't bother asking... Only ask yourselves, what if I'm right.

I wouldn't really doubt it.

Although, personally I feel it's a combination of the US's decline, and their moving up. It's like two people in a foot race, the guy in the lead is faster, but he sprains his ankle and falls down allowing the runner-up to pass him.

Off topic but you have to tell me WHAT IS THE DEAL WITH THAT AVATAR?!?!?!
That thing creeps me the eff out. What's it from?

Thanks....I think.

As far as your theory goes you may be right but I am curious as to why most people equate Chinas success with a direct threat to America?

Well, when Chinese students are out performing US students, is that really a surprise?

If we were to really focus on education, instead of it only being an election issue, we could turn this around.

But that would require work from teachers, students, and parents......oh it's probably too hard. I'm sure the Chinese will share.

Economically, everything is so global that it probably doesn't matter which country's R&D gets there first since the products will sell worldwide.
Military wise, there's an entire level of hidden technology, which probably includes a new source of energy, that won't be revealed anytime soon anyway.
School wise, the US said goodbye to that spot a long time ago.

I was just looking for one that would creep you the eff out lol. Its from an old French film if memory serves me right but I'm damned if I can remember the name off the top of my head...I'll try and find it out again.

Now...should I make a new thread about Avatars? China people, China...

I'm going to say no. Bad information. You would have to be very specific in how they are going to overtake the USA, or in which way they are going to.

China is a massive country, in some areas it is post modern and others it is pre-turn of the century.

Also it has a major problem with counter fitting and corruption. In fact, I hazard to guess that a lot of successful tech companies in the region have foreigners on the board.

Trade deficit, buying US debt in massive quantities, and acquiring a vast amount of US businesses and manufacturing is no coincidence... It is too late to be seen as a threat to America now, damage is done!

By the way, I am right.

Going to be a long hot summer.

I think you have hit the nail on the head there. Its about Chinas discipline and determination as a country, A lot of Western nations are to complacent now to strive in quite the same way. This and the earlier posters comments about growing superstitions and somewhat strange beliefs in America causing people to turn away from sciences.

If you leave a vacuum something will always fill it first chance it can.
