In the largest study ever into the genetics of autism, the scientists identified rare genetic variations that were 20% more frequent in children with autism than in children without the disorder. These so-called "copy number variations" (CNVs), which can be missing chunks of DNA or extra copies of sequences in and around genes, occur in less than one in 100 people in the general population.

I submitted two links. One saying that it was due to an increase in diagnosis (now that I look back, it does say 2004 ) The other link stated a genetic factor; another article here indicating a possible genetic link (slightly newer this one)

People talk about consciousness change occurring due to 2012 or aliens all the time on this site but almost all have overlooked the obvious, this is the only logical next step in evolution. Physical changes take millions of generations to complete, like the little toe disappearing. But neurological or chemical changes may be a bit more radical happening abruptly, like the monkey who picked up a bone to fight with.

Plastics, heavy metals, increases in vaccinations, pesticides, nutritional deficiencies, electromagnetic smog....take your pick. The truth is that the current rate of change in our environment is unprecedented for humanities evolutionary history, and this translates into a mucking up of our genome.
I don't think this is a result of under/over diagnosis. It's real, and those who choose to pass this off as not much at all are a bit foolish, imo.
