Forget net neutrality and the cable companies, THIS is how the internet stays free.
www.ecfiber.net...

Its called the "East Central Vermont Community Fiber Network", and its a joint venture of 23 Vermont Towns (see map on Home page), seeking to build and operate a municipally-owned universal, open access, fiberoptic telecommunications network, free from government and broadband companies.

Wishful thinking? Maybe, but its worth spreading the word and letting people know that other alternatives are trying to be implemented by communities for a free and open internet, as opposed to just 'net neutrality vs broadband companies', and the dreaded 'Internet2.'

I recommend to the mods that this be moved to the Science and Technology Forum.

But the WLANs in coffee shops and in homes are still subject to Internet service providers and therefore can be shut down by government mandate or tightly controlled by the cable companis like verizon, etc.

What ECFiber proposes would be a community network independent of government and current ISPs. From what I understand, the internet doesnt have a kill switch. In order to kill the internet, the government must pressure all ISPs to shut down.

Actually the internet has a kill switch, using some sort of attack on routers, it was here on ATS, can't find the thread now.
If eveyone connects this way by diffirent network you essentially get a new internet.
