"A radiation level of 100,000 counts per minute will be introduced as a new standard for decontamination, up from 6,000 counts per minute, the government said, adding that raising the bar will not endanger health.

The government's Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency said the decision was made based on advice from domestic nuclear experts and the International Atomic Energy Agency."

Disgusting! The IAEA (nuclear shills) and nuclear "experts" are now trying to convince people radiation is safer now than ever before to be exposed to. How will this not endanger people? I am in disbelief. These IAEA and nuclear shills are the same people that were on the news saying everything was fine and there was no radiation.

Nothing to see here.. move along?

Sorry for the simple one-liner but I really feel this way. Every time things get worse with the radiation disaster all the government/powers seem to brush it off quickly. Either we are all REALLY overreacting (this would include japanese people as well) or there really is nothing to be concerned about. But I don't trust the people telling us not to be concerned very much...

They have developed the same math equations that the Federal Reserve was using. I think this is a wonderful thing, that they have evolved in their usage of math....

How many times does this make they have raised it now? 2-3 ? Maybe before its over no radiation will hurt anyone no matter the rate.....They have a way of doing things like this when it doesn't concern them...

Science being re-written on the fly to justify Govt. actions and soothe a terrified nation.

"It's all good! We have re-calculated and discovered that the entire scientific community around the World has been wrong all along and there really is nothing to worry about. Now carry on, nothing to see here."

So for comparison sake, does anyone know what the acceptable rate for other industrialized countries are? A 17xs increase in an acceptable rate gets even my attention, but it would be nice to have something to compare it to.

I guess they are limiting their future legal damages when claims are later filed in the courts.

If that is not right, can anyone offer an alternative explanation?

Oh my god they are crazy!

Isn't 100 or so CPM's the amount of exposure you get in a CAT scan?

Here's some information that people should really know when it comes to radiation...

Epidemiologic studies have found that the estimated lifetime risk of dying from cancer is greater by about 0.004% per mSv (0.04% per rem) of radiation dose to the whole body

From An Evaluation of Radiation Exposure Guidance for Military Operations: Interim Report

Sounds like the Japanese gov't is really trying hard to kill their people off with this kind of advice.

This is from the "First Resonders Guidebook"

www.crcpd.org...

• People contaminated to levels greater than 100,000 cpm are likely to have internal
contamination and should be identified as a priority for follow-up for internal contamination.
("Instructions to the Public Waiting for Decontamination at the Scene of the Incident" is available in
the Forms and Handouts section and on the CD.) (See Appendix 6 for Guidance for Assessing
Internal Contamination.)

So, I guess they're safe if they only have 99,000 cpm? Gimme a friggin' break!

Such a sad situation with all citizens in Japan they want
to give them conflicting reports that more radiation exposure
is just fine - next thing will be to tell them its alright to eat
the contaminated food. The people are now at the total
mercy of the govt and because of fear and weakness
from not eating and the elements they have no choice
to comply. The timing on this new standard stands
out like the "lie" that it is. I am very disturbed and very
concerned for the people.

I'm sure their new standards can easily be debunked. Does anyone know the exact amount of radiation the people in Chernobyl were exposed to? We can then compare that to the level of radiation that the Japanese have been exposed to and note the difference.

If you look at the excerpt from the article below, you will notice that the cancer rates have definitely increased from the Chernobyl incident. Most effects of radiation take several years to appear. Knowing this, isn't it logical to conclude that our beloved "Experts" cannot simply raise the standards without monitoring the effects of this crisis over time? Furthermore, what proof do they have that humans can withstand 100,000 CPM of radiation without being harmed in the process? I'm not referring to the minority of individuals that can resist it, but people as a whole.

"Ukraine's Health Ministry estimates that 3.5 million people, over a third of them children, have suffered illness as a result of the contamination, and the incidence of some cancers is 10 times the national average.

First Deputy Health Minister Olga Bobylyova said: "The health of people affected by the Chernobyl accident is getting worse and worse every year.

"We are very disturbed by these data."

Ms Bobylyova told a news conference that the death rate among workers exposed to radiation while cleaning up Chernobyl has been rising. "

Cancer rates are highest in the Northeast US. I wonder why? Three Mile Island. And that wasn't a full blown meltdown. They acted like the "small" amount of radiation would have no effect. but there clearly is an effect as we see the Northeast is more prone to cancer.

Explanation:

The Japanese Government has advised citizens to consult professionals in case the radiation count exceeds 100,000cpm (cpm: counts per minute) measured by a Geiger-Muller Counter. Here is an explanation why professional consultation is not required below this value.

Assume that Iodine-131 (one of the radioactive materials commonly found after nuclear power plant accidents) is on your skin.
If a Geiger-Muller counter reads 100,000cpm, it means only 1/4000 of the radiation amount which could cause any skin damage by radiation. In addition, almost all of the Iodine-131 on the skin will be removed by simple washing and natural scaling-off of the skin. Even if it remains on the skin, the radioactivity becomes 1/1000 in two months, because the half-life (the period of time taken for the radioactivity to be halved) of Iodine-131 is 8 days.
From these reasons, no damage to the skin would be expected in case the radiation count is below 100,000cpm.

Most of the radioactive materials are found on your clothes or hands. Therefore, it is sufficient to take your clothes off and wash your hands or remove them by wet tissue paper.

I wonder if it's possible that perhaps the OP is over reacting..

I think it might be possible that radiation in smaller quantities isn't as deadly as it was once thought to be.

Also OP, you may want to consider this..

But the radiation is getting worse over there, and they are likely setting it at a higher rate, because health facilities are probably full there, and that they may not have time to deal with anything but more severe radiation exposure..
