U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) earthquake geologist David Schwartz, who heads the San Francisco Bay Area Earthquake Hazards Project, concurred. "Simon Winchester is a popular science writer, not a scientist," Schwartz said. "I'm not saying we won't have an earthquake here in California at some point in the future, but there really is no physical connection between these earthquakes."

Just saw this a while ago and didnt see anything posted yet. i personally believe that the possibility of a CA quake is not only possible but considering the events of recent completely plausible and should be taken seriously and not just brushed off with a "that wont happen to us" type dismissal.

Also i want to say that they are for more qualified to make those predictions and assessments and I take what they say seriously but sometimes i have to go with my gut that things aren't right and that these things could set off a chain of events we may not be prepared to handle and/or deal with. Thoughts from smarter people than me?

I'm not qualified, but I'm pretty sure we are on the same tectonic plate ie "ring of fire" so that seems like a "physical connection" to me being as California is on the borders of the same physical plate as Japan. hmmm.... I don't think anyone really knows. Interesting though.

Absolutely it's happened before and WILL happen again. It's my personal belief that as qualified and intelligent as scientists are i think that some live in a bubble of denial. Like they just can't or won't accept that these events may take place in their lifetimes so they just play it off as "normal" fluctuations and anomalies. And because their science offers a rational explanation of events it comforts them.

On teh other hand fear mongering is just as bad as holding out info to people. We just need to be in a medium level between denial and alarmist and then we will get somewhere.

With all the action going on in the world these days, anything is possible. Myself, I think that the next big one on this side of the pond will be the New Madrid fault.

They were also sure a 9 couldn't happen in Japan where it happened.

They were "very surprised."
