lets hope its not true, but every link i have been reading says it is unlikely that the radiation will travel the pacific and hit cali. im hoping theyre telling the truth (unlikely), i got family in southern cali

You can actually make a radiation meter at home with simple readily available materials. Type home made radiation detector into a search engine for a starter. Here is a link to one in the mid range for difficulty, some are much simpler.

Also, keep an eye on small animals and birds (if there are any left) for possible early warning signs.

One could predict where this fallout will fall by looking at history from WWII. The Japanese sent hydrogen balloons armed with mines to the US. One person was killed and only a few of these bombs made landfall. The weather patterns are similar today. Look out Oregon and Northern Cali!
