Are they not using gigantic ships to water down the fires at fukushima?

I haven't been paying enough attention, sorry if this is stupid...

There's a body of water there, and the ships are gigantic enough that there'd be a lot of space between the operators and the plant, and it'd be easy to rig them with all kinds of protection... Before the disaster, robotically operating a giant water pump at the end of a boat would probably be childsplay...

I've seen pictures of giant ships destroyed and pushed inland, but is their infrastructure so crushed that they can't use others, or are there other reasons why I'm hearing that they're relying on helicopters dropping water, and guys with riot hoses?

I'm probably underestimating how big the site is, and just how bad everything is, but it seems like it'd be pretty easy to moor the biggest ship available as close as possible to shore, and keep a constant flow of water on the place, if that's even what they're trying to do...

There were ALOT of things that could be done and should had been done except NO nation has offered to come to the rescue of the nuclear reactors......NONE!

What does that tell you? I'm sure all the Globalist Elite are REAL happy to see Japan wiped off the map. My bet is they are celebrating already.

Obama? Plays golf while preparing for his up and coming trip to Puerto Rico.

Makes me sick to the stomach!

The spray of water, would never reach the reactor's.
If you look at the helicopters dumping water, the water just spread out, so when reaching ground, its useless.

Even the best water canons can't shoot much more than like 400ft. So they probably wouldn't be able to help that much, since most of the reactors are 700+ft away from shore.

How about building a containment wall, and flooding the whole place ?

Because it's not just about submerging the fuel rods (they are trying to cool the used fuel in the storage ponds) the water has to be flowing, if it sits still, the rods boil it off, create hydrogen, potential explosion, and as they become exposed, the steel casing oxidizes which weakens it, and we're half way to a melt down.

Now they are saying, cause of the MOX it could actually start a chain reaction

You know, I'm really getting irritated over the lack of knowledge here. You don't know what you're talking about. We (the U.S.) were the first ones on the ground with our Japanese brothers, helping out. We've since sent in, in ADDITION to the troops we already have on bases located in Japan, an additional 500 or so military members from Okinawa. We also have planes and choppers flying non-stop back and forth, with supplies. We have a couple of ships docked off the coast, just in case. The best minds in the U.S. are helping to work out strategies with the Japanese in regards to their reactor situation, but you have understand...all the help in the world won't do any good unless they 1.) ask for it, 2.) take the suggestions. The Japanese have since met with U.S. military officials from local bases, and are coordinating efforts with needs. Water canons HAVE been considered, but the problem with that is that the ship would be located DIRECTLY downwind, and lethally close to the largest doses of radiation. Are you criticizing the U.S. for not doing that? Keep in mind, the Japanese navy is pretty powerful as well...they have water canons too. Rest assured, if it can be done, they will be the first ones to do it. But please give credit where credit is due.

Please folks, if you're going to make blanket statements, at least get SOME of your facts straight.

I'm not giving any country credit because not enough was done in the first place when this could had been avoided within 24 hours after the Tsunami. The US military and America's so-called nuclear experts did stuff all actually in regards to the nuclear reactors but had plenty of time for a media thrill to give them their 5 mins of fame.

Your couple of ships, actually one was an aircraft carrier was docked 140km off the coast of Japan and when things got tough they sailed out even further. They gased up the Japanese helicopters, yes.

YOUR Japanese brothers? LOL Come on, thats BS. The only reason why your lot are there is to spy on North Korea and China. It's as simple as that. Without American bases in Japan....the Japanese mean squat to you!

What I DID see was a large contingency of search and rescue teams from some countries go in.

My guess is you don't know about USAID going in there......to cover up the whole darn operation in Japan.

Any how.....

this just came on the news wire and I hope for the sake of all the Japanese people this is true:

What I don't understand is why they can't do something like this:
Take a giant fire hose or two. Tie a cinder block and a 100-200 meter cable to the end. Hook it to a helicopter. Fly the end over the reactor and lower it right in. The other end would be as far away from the reactor as possible with a giant pump on it.

The radiation was only about 89 millisieverts at 90 meters up.

Are you kidding? The Japanese government isn't even getting the correct info from TEPCO. Our military satelites and now Global Hawk flyovers are probably supplying their government with more accurate info. One of the prior posters hit the nail on the head....their government has to formally request help, which they eventually did and we are. I see people bitch and moan about the US not doing enough, yet we're the only naval force in the world with assets in place and actively helping. It's a tough call for the Japanese. If they let it be known that things are worse than they are then they risk mass chaos and people just abandoning rescue and recovery operations and cleanup. You say the carrier was moved away...what would you expect them to do? He's in charge of roughly 6,000 people and probably 8 or 9 billion dollars worth of ship, planes and equipment.

I think it would be a bit of a reach too shoot water 600-800 feet just to reach reactor #4,

Japan a robot power everywhere except at nuclear plant

TOKYO, March 17 (Reuters) - Japan may build robots to play the violin, run marathons and preside over weddings, but it has not deployed any of the machines to help repair its crippled reactors.

While robots are commonplace in the nuclear power industry, with EU engineers building one that can climb walls through radioactive fields, the electric power company running Japan's Fukushima Dai-ichi plant has not deployed any for the nuclear emergency.

Instead, its skeleton team has been given the unenviable and perhaps deadly task of cooling reactors and spent nuclear fuel on their own, only taking breaks to avoid over-exposure.

A science ministry official said a robot used to detect radiation levels is at the site of the accident in Fukushima, north of Tokyo, but nuclear safety agency official Hidehiko Nishiyama said: "We have no reports of any robots being used."

Makes me think th Japanese governmen sees people as a cheaper commodity vs a robot that would need to be stored after radioactive contamination.

I don't know why the U.N. and the militaries of the top countries in the world aren't all over this thing regardless of whether Japan asks for it or not. If full melt-down occurs - especially of Reactor 3 (plutonium) - the entire world is going to be horribly impacted for decades. It may sound cold, but military personnel are in the very serious game of protecting their country and its people even if it means certain death to them. Chernobyl was small potatoes compared to the potential ramifications of not containing the meltdown at Fukushima.

Why aren't all hands on deck right now? Maybe they could at least conduct a suicide mission of cementing every reactor and storage pool for containment.

I sure hope the lack of real leadership on this issue is due to ineptitude and not intent. People would be a lot less panicked if they knew everything possible was being done to stop this from going into full meltdown.

If reactor 3 melts down it will be a problem for longer then decades CNN reported the plutonium39 in use at reactor 3 has a half life of over 24000 years... Ya thats what was said, scary how scientists were admitting this was a global concearn, using words like apocalyptic to describe possibilities...

Right. So why aren't we "storming the beaches of Normandy"? If I was over there, I'd be going in myself if it would save the world from what seems otherwise inevitable at this point.

I just love how armchair know-it-all's like you make themselves look like idiots with the crap they spew. You don't know what you're talking about. I live here. We have bases here. I've had meetings with officials since the first warning came about. Don't spread your rumors, because you don't know what the hell you're talking about.
