Federal officials arrested the Columbus mayor, police chief and one village trustee in an early morning round-up targeting 11 people Thursday, said Luna County Sheriff Raymond Cobos, whose department was not involved in the arrests.
Cobos said the arrests were based on weapons and drug charges.
Columbus Mayor Eddie Espinoza has been in office for five years.
The arrests were carried out by a combination of agents from Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the Bureaur of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and the U.S. Marshal's Service
