I don't mind ads that much, until they have audio then I navigate away from the site.

I like to listen to music loud with headphones on while I surf the net, and when you are listening to something, and some kind of cleaning product ad starts blaring into your ears it is uber annoying.

So if there is any possible way to not have ads that contain an audio message I would love it. Seriously though the second it happens I click on any other bookmarked site to end the noise as soon as possible.

Most adds that have sound are flash-adds. Those can be killed using firefox with the flashkiller add-on. I don’t know how to beat them with other browsers but this one does it for me. It works with one quick click on a small icon in the bottom right corner of the browser, killing only the flash content of the tab you are using.

You can get flashkiller here

If the adds become too flashy, their gone faster than you can say “Get lost”

My god, yes. I transcribe for my job, so I wear headphones when I'm at my computer about 99% of the time. Sometimes I'll have this site up in the background and just be typing along when all of a sudden, I'm blasted with "CONGRATULATIONS! YOU'RE A WINNER!!" or some other noise. It about makes me soil my bloomers. I have since learned to just close my browser and when I take a break to surf, turn off my sound.

I would tend to agree that the audio adds are very very annoying. I wouldn't promote add blocker software though as this is how ATS makes money to stay open.

I do think it would be fair to ask the administration to negotiate with their add provider to disallow audio adds as I do think it will detract from the site and could very easily cause a drop in unique page hits.

If this does occur they will have a good case and could likely get this negotiated without interfering with their revenue stream.

I believe with the number of page visits ATS receives they should have some negotiating power.with the add provider to block audio adds without effecting revenue. Or just sell add free subscriptions to anyone who is annoyed by the advertising.

Using popup blockers and such is against TOS actually. Not that I agree with it, just giving you a heads up. I found that out after recommending my favorite one, when other people complained about this very thing. Nothing more annoying than waking up the whole house, because an audio pop up comes up, and you forgot to turn the speakers down after the last time watched a movie :/

The ones that annoy me are the Seizure inducing flashing ones at the top of the page pronouncing that I am a "winner". Yep, me and Charlie Sheen

I wonder how much market research these ad guys actually do. Back in the day when I played webmaster the ads that always worked for me were the most simple text Ads. Especially the ones that look like legitimate links. Nobody wants to click into pop-up flashing hell.

I swear someone learned how to program in Flash and just can't help but make the gaudiest thing possible with little regard to web traffic patterns...

There is one on here that annoys me.

It plays a MIDI version of the A-Team themes song.

I would not mind so much if it was not a MIDI.

I pity the fool.

Flash killer is not an aggressive add blocker. It is a simple NO! button. IF ATS does it’s job of keeping soundadds off the site, I will not use my button.

And I must say, I don’t use the stop bottun often on ats. It’s a rather clean. But if they slip I don’t feel I am breaking any rules, they are.

Mine!

One of the great things about ATS (among many) is that the sight owner actually has a thread devoted to ads that are invasive or problematic:

Skeptic Overlords Worst Ads Hitlist!

Please bookmark that link, as it is pure gold! Before I was a moderator I complained about an ad (maybe two, I can't recall) which were horrible - I do recall one was a very touchy, screen blocking roll over ad.. It was gone within hours of my complaint.

What other websites care enough to let the membership to complain an ad away? Like Charlie Sheen, ATS is all about bi-winning.

while I will watch and listen to this thread
I will not participate except for this post.

The last time I commented on ads
displayed on ATS, I inadvertently broke
the T&C's of this site and was post banned
for a week. I went into DT's and almost died
of lack of ATS participation. hahahaha

That was one of the worst weeks of my recent life.

All I can say is:

I love ATS a hell of a lot more
than I dislike advertising.

best wishes and I hope I didn't
break the T&C's again

The audio ads you have no control over are worst, I've had to close my tab a few times in the past.
