As an update, they are reporting that the animal has been caught and positively identified as a fox by a local vet:

I thought the Texas animal was maybe a diseased kangaroo, but after studying pictures of the animal, I don't think it's hind is large enough to be a kangaroo. Its snout also isn't nearly long enough to be a coyote, what the hell is it?

It looks like the front legs of the Texas animal are too short to be effectively used.. As in, it's head would have to be facing downwards for it's feet to be on the ground in use.. Hm.
