EG&G was a collection of small technology companies. Mostly systems and components, but some government services. I think EG&G got the Groom business
because they were all over the Nevada Test Site anyway, and had the security clearances. No use exposing the Groom operation to another private
company.
To elaborate, I think a great number of companies could have done Groom security. EG&G was on the NTS due to their technical skills (Rapidtronic
cameras for instance), and got the security contract by default.
The general public couldn't differentiate between a division makes heat sink (Wakefield) or EG&G Measurements (NTS). When I worked for EG&G, we got
two bomb scares a year, even though we weren't making anything nuclear at the division.
