I have no problem with men having multiple partners, as long as it is ok for those women to have multiple partners.

Otherwise, forget it.

What about Aids and other diseases? Just wondering.

And who looks after the kids?

Yes. A good point.
Why do some cultures tend to make polygamy hurtful and some do not?

A good question and one I can't answer if this is in fact true.....

I have watched a quite a few documentaries about various polygamist cultures and I have yet to see one in which the women (in the cases where the husband had multiple wives) were actually happy when interviewed in private and had anonymity.

While I believe that it is natural for men and women to seek multiple partners I also believe its natural for a person to keep that side of their nature quiet. This secretiveness serves to protect any offspring of that secret liaison. As has been mentioned before many monogamous animals also practice this.

Women used to be polygamous - yes.
Aids was not around in those times.
Women did... probably. Who knows. Man are as capable as woman to look after children.
