Why are we such a distopian society?

Being a fan of some of the greatest sci fi writers, such as Issac Asimov, Ray Bradburty and Arthur C. Clark, among others, I grew up with the sense that society was always looking to move forward toward a utopian "great society" which would allow us to explore and colonize the planets and even other stars.

I always held the beleif that our leaders would always be looking for the best for our society and the evolution of man as a whole, however, I am now convinced that we have failed to hold our leaders to account, and are now watching, largely powerlessly, as they have taken over every aspect of our lives.

The powers that be own us, 100%. They own our media, they own our food supply chain, our energy supply chain, our political parties, and even our religion. We have become distracted by the silly things in life, and are now facing our own ruination because of our neglect.

Why is it that people are so self-absorbed and self-centered, that they are working for companies that are raping our national resources and destroying our economy? How is it that we are electing people, and they are appointing like minded friends, who are simply seeking power to gain money and power with no consideration to the rights and needs of their constintuency?

I am heart-broken, because I see a World that is spinning out of control, and am fearful that there is no way out of the hole that has been dug for us economically, socially, and politically. Is there anyone out there that can give me a reason to feel better?

There will never be a Utopian society until we can get past the greed, irrelevant political paradigms and the utter nonsense we bring upon ourselves.

We are all scared of a little controlled socialism, and some are scared to practice some self responsibility. The "sweet spot" is somewhere in the middle of all this, and we will never learn to live peacefully until we value human life as much as we do our damned Ipods.

Is there anyone out there that can give me a reason to feel better?

well ice cream always works for me other than that
and maybe just researching how bad everyone else around
the world has it compared to us . just enjoy the ride and get
ready to fight the good fight the time grows nearer and then
we can make it right again. New begging .

i agree with all of the above and the only thing i have to say is that no matter what fight for what you believe in and keep on keeping on believe in only half of what you see and nothing that you hear

That doesn't work anymore...as an American, I have long been proud of how much we have accomplished, yet now I see a society that is sick and dying. We have lost our industrial might, our education system is a joke and has fallen way behind the rest of the World, and self-serving politicians and government officials have allowed corporations and foreign interest to rape and pillage our country.

I fear that soon we will be seeing a bloody and horrible revolution/civil war like none ever in history. We have been set up to fail, and have sown our own seeds of destruction. The only hope is if enough of our military will stand up to the userpers who have taken over, and will join on our side in the fight against those who would like to see us destroyed and absorbed into a World Government.

I am hoping people start to wake up and realize that we are enabling the beast by supporting it either with our jobs and as consumers. Everything we do makes a direct impact and if each of us starts taking a little more control then that gives them less control and things will have to change because a tiger is not going to hang around where he's not getting fed for free.

Because man still has MUCH learning to do. In a way, these bodies evolved from apes (with help) and now look at us. We have to many things going for us that we can't focus on one clearcut goal. In effect I'd just say right now's the state of 'lazyness' or 'dark ages' where we learn to always keep the government in check as if not, it's bound to be dominated by greed because of the sole fact of the power and how easy it is to resort back to animalistic instincts rather then taking the way of spirit, or self.

Change starts at home though as I like to say. Be the change you want to see. Myself? I'm going to face.. Not a block but an 'opportunity' and go out into the wild with the clothes on my back, surrendering. How's it relate? Because getting over personal blocks will greatly help how you perceive things.

I agree that we should observe other less fortunate people in order to develop a sense of gratitude for the things we do have but just because people out there have it worse than us doesn't mean we shouldn't try to solve our problems. Maybe our government enslaves us in a much friendlier way, setting up a veil of freedom which doesn't exist but it is abusive nonetheless. I don't understand why when people come to these sorts of realizations they allow feelings of helplessness to overcome them instead of realizing that the conviction of honest, hardworking people who want fairness is infinitely more powerful than their purchasing power.
