I heard taking a vitamin everyday can slow the effects of AIDs. Could this lead to a breakthrough?

Woohoo!! I'm glad someone has a firm grasp of the obvious. Good health = better health in response to illness.

Vitamin supplements are largely a waste of money and most of what you take isn't needed and flushed down your toilet with your urine. But who knows, perhaps a mega-dose of vitamins that give you kidney failure would also slow AIDS.

There are, however, some very real treatments for AIDS and HIV that exist today but aren't often available in time to those exposed, or too expensive to be given after exposure. ER hilited this whole mess a year or so ago if anyone remembers....

If you are a health care professional, and you are exposed to a needlestick, blood in the eye, etc.. the person who those fluids came from are tested immediately for HIV. If it's positive, the worker is then given immediate antivirals and some heavy duty drugs for a month or so. The chances of actually contracting HIV are drastically reduced and the virus is essentially eliminated. In the medical professional world, this can be considered a "cure" for HIV and AIDS.

Unfortunately, in the real world, its not just medical professionals that are exposed to body fluid that contains the HIV virus. If you knew you were exposed to HIV during sex and could start meds immediately then you probably wouldn't have had sex to begin with. Time is critical for these drugs to work. Even if you knew you had just been exposed, the cost of the drugs is limiting for an individual.
