Countries scramble to evacuate citizens from Libya

ANKARA, Turkey – Governments scrambled by air and sea to pick up their citizens stranded by Libya's bloody unrest on Tuesday, with thousands of people crowding the airport to await evacuation and Egyptians gathering at the border to escape the chaos.

"The airport was mobbed, you wouldn't believe the number of people," said Kathleen Burnett, of Baltimore, Ohio, as she stepped off an Austrian Airlines flight from Tripoli to Vienna on Tuesday.

Nations around the world are now trying to get their people out as quickly as possible. The airports are overwhelmed and people have been directed to ports to be evacuated.

There is more than that though going on.

In Egypt, Foreign Minister Ahmed Aboul Gheit accused Gadhafi's son Seif al-Islam of inciting violence against Egyptians by suggesting they joined the protests against his father.

I have a feeling before this is over with Egyptian troops may end up in what was once Libya.

Holy hell! This is big # man! I hope they get most of them out safely. Sadly I think many more poeple will lose their lives. Such a sad #in world...

He still has his sons, who are the ones who most likely really ran the country.

Their days are numbered though.

Peru just cut diplomatic relations and is calling for a No Fly Zone to be established over Libya.

As soon as the foreign nationals are evacuated expect NATO to become involved. No one is going to do anything until their citizens are out. Once they are gone though, anything can and will happen.

Our government is quickly working to get as many canadians out of harms way as possible at this very moment

We enforce it the same way we did in Iraq under Saddam or the zones over Bosnia and Kossovo. We have radar and other equipment that can detect fighter bombers and other military aircraft that could be used against the people.

Its not difficult at all.

I wouldn't assume his sons are so behind the leadership as you may think. At least two have previously fled the country after criticising the regime, only to return after being "forgiven", including Saif. Even important Generals have defected to the opposition, including the commander in charge of Benghazi and the surrounding area. It seems Gaddafi only has his core supporters and they are thinning out quickly too.

Turkey says, this is the biggest evacuation in their history, having brought more than 5000 people out of Lybia during the last 72 hours.
UK lingered longer than others, now two charter flights are on their way.
US does not dare to send planes, because the Madman over there could think, they send special forces, but pick up their citizens with ferries today.

The eastern half of Libya is said to be under control of the protesters.

We tried to send to planes.

We were denied by Libya. Thats why the ferry from Malta was sent.

Yesterday when the British Foreign Secretary announced the charter flights and the deployment of HMS Cumberland, he also said:

In light of the fluid and dangerous situation we are urgently reinforcing our team on the ground with specialist personnel to provide additional help and assistance to British nationals. ...we will also assist some of our Embassy staff and their families who are not needed to deal directly with the current situation to leave Libya while sending additional specialised Foreign Office personnel trained in crisis response.

Today he said that Britain, as well as two other countries, has a “robust, specialist presence on the ground". Heavily euphemised but I think that you get the picture. In the same speech he said that he isn't ruling out the use of military aircraft to pick up British nationals if they are required, with or without permission from Gaddafi.

The Egypts also said, they would use military means to get out their people, if necessary.
I think this is just another sign, that nobody does believe, that Gaddafi has much support anymore.

I myself am expecting his fall every hour. His speech yesterday was too crazy.
