This is almost embarrassing to post ,but it did happen to me and Im guessing it may have happened to others as well.

I bought a new car the other day. No big deal right? Well the funny thing was,I felt so sad about my old car. I dang near cried. I felt like I was abandoning it or something. Stupid right?I mean I know it is just a machine, yet I still felt a sense of loss or something.

The more I thought about it though a odd thought occurred to me. I wondered if because in past lives
the horse used to get us where we were going. I wonder if I was feeling a sense of horse loss if that made sense? Like a carry over from the past that is embedded in me somewhere.

lol, well I just thought I would throw this thought out there and see what you folks think of it!

When one spends a lot of time with something, whether or not that something is alive, one tends to become attached. The same thing happens when one has lived in a house for any length of time.

It`s memories...good, bad, and ugly, they all add up and one becomes attached to that `thing`.

been there, done that, will probably shed a tear or two again..........

What you felt was the loss of money leaving your wallet and mistakenly thought it was feeling for your old car lol. But yeah sometimes people become attached to the things they own .

People often develop strong attachments to cars. We have memories associated with them much as we would with a house.

Embarrassing story of my own to make you feel better:

A few years ago, my wife got me a new coffee maker. Now understand I am a coffee fiend and had had the same coffee pot for about 9 years. It wasn't broken or anything, the new coffee pot was just nicer and had a timer so I could wake up to coffee as long as I took the time to set it up the night before.

Anyway, as I moved the old pot down to the basement, I felt like it was sad. I could imagine it asking me, "Did I make bad coffee? I'll try harder, really I will." I actually got a wee bit teary-eyed over it. Strange stuff. But again, I had had that pot for nearly a decade. It had kept me up through all night writing and studying sessions, it had made coffee and countless parties, had been my most trusted appliance in my first apartment. These things happen.

Its not silly, Welcome to the human race!! 99% of people have connections inanimate objects,

Most dont come right out and say it,

Its a case where you see the car as an extended part of yourself and your personality, The brain neurons connects to stuff like your emotion when you first drove that car,

A perfect example is hoarders for instance.. They fail to be able to get rid of objects around them as they connect emotionally with them, Past experience's, what a friend got them, or a reminder of some time in there life where they felt happy or sad,

So
your perfectly normal!

I have an old pair of shoes that i wont get rid off, There falling apart but i just cant get rid of them, Almost feel like they have been through so much on nights out lol that its wrong to throw them in a bin.

lol

I've had it happen to me before, it was odd. I felt all sappy after I sold my little truck to a friend, I got tears in my eyes too. I think maybe memories are attached to these things and we feel in some way we're giving those away too.

I have to add that a few months later the car was demolished. My friend was out chopping wood and a tree he cut down fell right on the truck, that made me sad too...you know...now that I remember, he never did paid me in full for that truck! I felt bad for him and the truck, oh well, lol.

I know how you feel. I will share and then you will feel positively normal.
I always name my cars, female names. My current car is a Toyota, color is "sky blue pearl" , I named her Lily Monet, after the painting "Water Lilys, 1906 by Claude Monet. That alone gets me funny looks, but then the year I bought her I also purchased a Monet calendar, for her so she could keep track of her appointments. I keep it in her trunk.
Feel better now?

Damn. Now I'm missing my old Toyota again. It was a 5 speed 4x4, flat deck, 1984, leaky window, crappy interior, grey. That little ugly truck got me anywhere/everywhere I needed to go. So reliable, except in the rain when it poured down on my lap. It was a good yard truck, I really could use it now.

You just don't know the treasures you have until they're gone. Damn.

If you found it necessary to get rid of your new car tomorrow, do you think that you would experience this same 'grief' reaction?

I admit to having felt twinges of regret upon having to get rid of some of my past cars that have served me well. For me, it is simply the association I have with the vehicle and events surrounding its use.

I'm pleased to see asala's reference to the hoarding issue. My mom is a compulsive hoarder and the attachment she has to her abnormally large stash of things is unhealthy. If you had been unable to part with your old vehicle at all due to your sentimental attachment to it, then that would have truly been worth feeling embarrassed about.

I hope you took some photos of the old car before you parted with it.

This is a cool thread.

The longer something is around, the more deep and complex the associations, and the more emotive value it will have for you, I guess. I have attachments to a few random objects: A particular old-timey safety pin that's always been hanging around since I was a kid; an old ratty belt I've had since highschool, a few old tools that I've had for a long time. I wonder what the inner psychology of this kind of thing is.

I'm guessing its a lot easier to form a stronger connection with something like a house or an automobile, too, so the associations with a car would be deeper? It probably does have soemthing to do with whatever instinct led us to domesticate and care for animals, too, like the OP pointed out.

I have a similar issue with my houseplants. They are all huge and well taken care of and so thick that sometimes I have to cut them back. Well, I save every stinkin little leaf and stem and try to get more starts out of them if I can because I feel like I would be committing an act of murder by not at least trying. I have cups and vase's and old yogurt containers full of starts. They are in every nook, cranny, and windowsill in the house. I get a gut wrenching gnawing in my stomach at the thought of tossing the stems in the garbage or compost pile. Granted they are 'living' things so there might be a difference, but my husband thinks I'm a whack job because of it. I haven't named any of them yet, so maybe there is a little hope for me.

lol Oh my, Plants are the worst...I feel that as well. Like you said though, I know the plants to be a living beings as I understand it, but whos to say the car isnt a living being in its own world that I have yet to learn to understand? lol to many dimensions changes for me now to absorb! Anything is possible

It's not stupid at all to have attachment or sentimental reverence for an inanimate possession, just very human.

People like what they know. That which they are familiar with.

I own two acoustic guitars. One is a relatively cheap, used Taylor that I bought at the age of 20 and I have played it and written songs on it for a number of years. It cost me $250 when I bought it. The craftsmanship is unremarkable.

I also have a Gibson acoustic I bought three years ago. The craftsmanship is immaculate, it sounds and plays great, it cost over $2000 new.

I still play the old raggedy one 98% of the time.

Humans are strange creatures, what can ya do?

I LOVE CARS!

They are like pets to me!

Don't get me started on the Jaguar, I had one of the last 12's.

I have also become very attached to the "beaters" I have had. What I would usually do is - have no car/save money (there's adequate public transport here), or have a junk car/save money - save up for the ones you can go warp speed in and take out a few phone poles / nearly kill yourself in!

Fun Fact - a Lotus Esprit will do 110 mph in 3rd gear!

Confining my thoughts to abject junk here - allow me to describe The Little Nazi Tank

This was, if memory serves, a 1982 VW Scirocco. Any type of suspension - struts, shock absorbers, was long gone. It had mechanical fuel injection. Any electronic part caught fire with regularity. The dashboard / circuit boards behind it - caught fire - often.

The entire transmission was falling out, at the end, was held on by one bolt and had rotated - so you had to launch Little Nazi Tank in second gear.

I remember looking in the rearview mirror and seeing all the other cars going away from me......

I HATED THIS CAR! With a burning, blinding passion! It was like trying to drive a wheezing, broke down, tank! No power steering either.
Once - the drivers door failed - would not close - I remember driving this DEATH TRAP - trying to hold the door closed, trying to launch the goddamned thing in 2nd and then grind through the rest of what gears were left, no steering, no suspension - and that particular incident happened in the winter / snow - on top of it.

Still, I grew oddly fond of Little Nazi Tank. One time I hit this bump - remember - no suspension - so it was like a very hard BANG! and knocked the rearview mirror off - which went whizzing past me and could've taken out my eye - ah - fond memories

Eventually, after apx 175K miles - Little Nazi Tank gave out. It was still running though! Very little compression left - someone must've "forgotten" to put oil in it, and got a new car - it was STILL RUNNING though - when it went to the junk yard and they were glad to have it too - because they could bust out the windows and it would make a good "yard car"

Little Nazi Tank thus became $35 for me

It might still be running in some junk yard somewhere, prowling around the car stacks........

Yes, exactly

I also wanted to add that I mean no disrespect to the German people, nor by extension, their cars. I am driving a Benz right now.

That - thing - - however - it was a horrid thing and to encounter the thing would leave you not only at a loss for a better description - maybe Satan Incarnate would've been a better moniker for it!

Jesus. That car. It defies description. In my past post I have but touched the surface of *how BAD* that monstrous POS truly was!

I still kind of - at times - miss Little Nazi Tank
I got a $50K Benz now - it gets touchy at times - maybe it is LNT's next incarnation LOL. Give it a few years and it will be
