Over the past decade, I've noticed a pattern. It seems that, every once in a while, someone picks up on the existence of the potential for some sort of natural disaster and posts an article about it online, and always adding at the end "Scientists say it may happen at any time". When they do this, people read the article, think it's new news, and proceed to freak out. Then, a couple weeks later, after nothing's happened, people forget about it, and, in most cases, find another natural disaster to freak out about until about a year later when someone else picks up on the disaster again, posts another article about, and starts the process all over again.

Now, I'm not saying we shouldn't be watchful of these things, but we should always be watching of all of them, not just one for a couple weeks at a time. And we also shouldn't read one article and assume that the disaster being hyped is both new and imminent. Chances are, there's nothing new or imminent about it. And, as a final note... no natural disaster is truly "overdue". These rely on averages of events that have no true pattern and, thus, their occurrence varies by thousands, even millions, of years. Nature doesn't do "overdue"...it's either ready to happen again or it's not.
