Israel Quietly Shuts Down Embassies as Sabers Rattle in the Middle East

As Days of Rage continue across the Middle East, and thoughts are far from the Israeli-Palestinian Peace Process, the Israeli Foreign Ministry took the unusual step earlier this week of quietly shutting down four embassies and putting others on high alert. That's because as attention has turned to protests in Bahrain, Yemen, Algeria, and Iran, sabers are rattling between Lebanon and Israel. Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak warned that his nation could once again enter Lebanon and Hezbollah once again promised to avenge its martyrs.

As the snippet says, an unusual step. But probably a wise one. There's a lot going on in the Middle East. The anniversary of the kidnapping, the protests and revolutions, and of course the ongoing issues between Israel and Iran, Syria, and Lebanon.

Is this precautionary or preparatory? Or maybe both.

Israel is also increasing activity on Blue Line and reports are saying they have breached Lebanese airspace (see additional news link).

Reports also suggested Israel was bolstering its border patrols in the region from which two of its soldiers were abducted by Hezbollah in 2006, sparking the devastating month-long war which followed.

“Israeli war drones have been flying over Nabatiyeh, Iqlim Al-Toufah and Khiyam, all in south Lebanon, since 11 a.m. Monday,” the National News Agency reported.

Israel is also in high "warning" mode again, saying they might "act" on the Iranian warships passing through the Suez Canal.

A lot of tinder here that any spark could ignite. False flags, one wrong move, a temper flaring. There is a master plan here. But then what's really new about that?

All this over religion... Sad sad times. Religion is one person's interpretation "telephoned" through other people. Its insane to think that an entire part of the globe has to deal with strife, warfare, and general "unease" because of a style of worship they have chosen to be a part of.

Religion and real estate. If I lived in Israel, I don't think I'd ever sleep. That or just bunker down and never wake up. Just too much always going on there.

The real estate became an issue because of religion. It appears to be a huge catch 22, no matter what side you are on.

Im not against religion in any way, I just cant believe people dont take a second to stop and think about it. It blows my mind to consider that neighbors are willing to kill each other because of the others belief system. How is that sane? How is that practicing the love and respect BOTH religions preach? Its ridiculous to practice one extreme view of a religion, while not understanding the religion as a whole.

What we forget is that the middle east has been has been at war for thousands of years with peace mixed in between. These are deep seeded emotions that go back way longer than anyone can remember. Seems like something is up, we wait and see.

All this middle eastern crap is Abraham's fault.Read about Abraham in the bible and all becomes clear.It's all a stupid fight between children and illigtimate children looking for some attention.They have been fighting for 3000 years and won't stop until one side or the other is destroyed.Whole thing is so childish and stupid I'm sick of hearing about it.Both sides can't even remember what they are fighting about.They are more like gangs fighting over turff.

I can't help but wonder just what that whole area will look like in a year's time.. maybe even sooner. I agree with you that if I lived in Israel I would never sleep...well to be honest I think if I lived anywhere in that region I would never sleep. Went out to the wonderful world of the webs to try and find an article I read last week in reference to this very topic you posted as a supporting post to your thread and in 5 minutes time came up with 3 other articles about sabre rattling all over the area. Not trying to derail your thread but I'll post them here if anyone is interested.

Israel's decision to quietly go about shutting down embassies I think is a good precautionary measure, however that, along with everything else that is going on over there, hardly makes me feel all warm and fuzzy on the insides.

Already mentioned apologies! Troubling times, never a dull moment in the Middle East!

It is my view that the Midle East is on the cusp of something massive.This could go anyway, it could get rid of Iran as an Islamic state, which in turn would starve the terror groups it supports. It could bring real freedom to millions all across the ME. On the downside it could be the start of more and more States becoming Islamic republics. The Spectre of such states is truly horrifying. If Egypt were to become an Islamic staet, war would break out in a matter of months in my opinion, very likely pre empted by Israel.

The Green Movement in Iran hold a lot of our futures in thir hands. Just my thoughts

Well religion to them is a way of life but more so big part of the Political System. No religion promotes violence. Style of worship has nothing to do with the thinking pattern and ultimately the thought process embedded into the Political System of the region which is for the most part Arab Muslims.

Precisely. There are so many fronts and by far Religion is the biggest one for many countries.

Ali Hasanov, head of the Presidential Administration's public policy department, commented to Trend news agency after the US, British and Israeli authorities recently issued travel alerts to their nationals in Azerbaijan.

"There is no threat either to embassy officials, or to foreigners in Azerbaijan," Ali Hasanov said.

"Sociopolitical life, the criminal situation in Azerbaijan are stable and the state is in charge. But every embassy, every state has its security criteria and they have the right to warn their citizens based on these criteria," Hasanov continued.

Israel's Counter Terrorism Bureau on 11 February warned Israeli travellers of terror threats to mark the anniversary of the assassination of Hezbollah officials. The bureau advised against visiting certain destinations, including Azerbaijan, Georgia, Armenia, Egypt, Turkey, Côte d’Ivoire, Mauritania and Venezuela.

A senior official at the Azerbaijani Presidential Administration has played down warnings of a possible terror threat in Baku.
