Flotilla of spacecraft planned to provide space weather forecasts

A swarm of spacecraft could be sent into orbit around the sun to provide an early warning system for the huge solar explosions that can interfere with electronic equipment on Earth and even influence our planet's weather.

Awful lot of attention being paid to that bright light in the sky of late. Not really a spaceweather expert by any means, so perhaps someone else can chime in on the feasibility of the plan.

Why is it during this sun cycle that we decide to send a bunch of satellites to observe it? Why did we never find this a big enough issue that it had to be so closely monitored before? Once again Nasa know's more than their releasing

How could we get such warnings if they are effected themselves by such space-weather?

i think it has to do with the fact, that there are more electronic systems now than ever before.
and that they say that it is stronger than it has ever been and are thinking that it will cause more interference.

and might even burn off the atmosphere.

just joking there.

damn didn't see the link. said same thing i did

So much attention is being paid to the sun, because it has such a real potential for devastating effects. There's nothing especially different about the sun than ever before, it always functions with a solar minimum and maximum; however, the reliance on and use of electronic devices is higher than ever before.

Just like how most buildings are built to withstand earthquakes, preventative measures should and will be taken. It's only a matter of time before we get a potentially dangerous solar storm and the same can be said about the aforementioned earthquakes. We can't control those (not going to delve into the conspiracy side here), what we can control is how well prepared we are for them and how much damage they will do.
