Could China be protecting major citys by building back up citys in the desert ready to go if coastal citys get destroyed ?

could be that they are preparing for something,

my guess is that if you had the time and money, building a city without bothersome people (traffic etc) would be much easier (planning and executing)

most cities, are slowly built over time, because of demand....and can end up really frigged up...anyone who has driven through Boston knows how difficult that can be.

That sounds plausible StaceyWilson but if I were China I wouldn't have built so many high-rises. If there world does get flipped upsidedown those buildings would just topple over.

This article, from TIME says that the city was built to house 1 million people by some developer during a boom and no one bought any buildings or businesses, but one of the government buildings operates. I am assuming it is because of the area being almost inhospitable. MAYBE this guy believes the coastal regions will be gone one day and everyone who has been displaced will flock to inner cities like his, and he will make a huge profit because of the high demand.

Reminds me of some movie where the guy was buying up property a couple hundred miles inland so that when California "fell into the sea", his property would be prime coastal property.

I watched a documentary about these empty city's and first thing that came to mind was these are perfect for filming zombie movies.

Living in one of these city's would be nice, no traffic, drive as fast as you like, no noise and no ques at the store

Lot's of strange looking buildings and designs, first I've heard of them. They look like they could be self supportive, maybe govt official/ top brass housing?

I hope we can build FEMA camps that nice.

It's hard to say what these cities could be used for. It would make sense if they were building these cities to move their population around but I haven't seen anything that looks like civilian buildings to me yet or maybe I missed them completely. The cities could also be used for military purposes such as military research. Or it could be one giant prison to house people. We will find out one way or another.
