'Tall order' sunlight-to-hydrogen system works, neutron analysis confirms

www.ornl.gov

In a step toward synthetic solar conversion systems, the ORNL researchers have demonstrated and confirmed with small-angle neutron scattering analysis that light harvesting complex II (LHC-II) proteins can self-assemble with polymers into a synthetic membrane structure and produce hydrogen.

This is a very important step in the right direction if we are to ever create clean, efficient hydrogen based fuel.

This looks like it has the beginnings of becoming a momentous breakthrough!

Just imagine what a find like this could mean worldwide!?
No more need for oil,no gas,no fossil fuel burning pollution and destruction to our planet!

It is still quite early on with their study but the implications this discovery hints at could very well be the catalyst we have been waiting for...Overcoming the greedy, fear mongering corrupt elite is a whole other hurdle.

One can dream...right?

It is a nice dream. I sincerely hope that it is not buried. Imagine the the freedom and energy independence the people of the world could have. Yes my friend, a nice dream indeed. S&F

Interesting article, thanks.

There are so many new energy technologies being unveiled lately, this one you've shown us, cold fusion, gravity wheels, magnetic, hopefully a few of them will make it this time.

Indeed, let us hope with all possible passion and fervour, that this discovery is not buried like the invention of the water driven car engine which could run on any water at all, clean or not that was developed in the late eighties.

FUEL CRISIS? WHAT FUEL CRISIS!
While I think its damned lovely that fuel companies and scientists are thinking up new fuels, and getting fuel from other sources than the ground, and making "cleaner" fuels (which still cost the environment to make in the first place), what no one is remembering is that you really can have power without negative by product. All you have to do is use similar techniques for generating power, as the ones shown in the videos.
The reason this never caught on?? Simple, it was buried by the oil companies. The only reason that all vehicles dont run this system right now, is that if they did the fuel based ecconomy would collapse entirely , and peoples and nations who have been powerful before, would find themselves with nothing to barter with, and a rapidly dwindling supply of money and resources.
This situation is considered by the powerful to be unacceptable, because the power comes from money, and the money comes from oil. Thats an over simplified view of the situation for the purposes of explanation of course, but true none the less.

There are many new theories, discoveries all across the realm of science it seems lately.
Not obsolete, insignificant ideas & findings either...Pretty revolutionary stuff...If only it sees the light of day.
I hope some sort of free energy device/method surfaces that we can use soon!
Fossil fuels are destroying this planet every which way considered ( environment/war/power struggles etc. )

based on the interaction of photosynthetic plant proteins with synthetic polymers -- that can convert visible light into hydrogen fuel. Photosynthesis, the natural process carried out by plants, algae and some bacterial species, converts sunlight energy into chemical energy and sustains much of the life on earth. Researchers have long sought inspiration from photosynthesis to develop new materials to harness the sun's energy for electricity and fuel production.

really interesting how they are using photosynthesis as their model.makes complete sense, harness all the energy you need form everyday sunlight...Clean Free Energy...I like the sound of that

Fossil fuels are literally destroying our planet...When you step back and look at it from every angle...Pollution,all the unneeded wars ( come on!...we know one of the real main reasons for going to war!) all for power, money and control.
It is pure insanity

As huge as news like this is, it's hard to escape thoughts of "meh". The discovery of oil could have led the entire world into a golden age. A seemingly unlimited supply of energy! Everything can be solved with more energy, right? But as you can see, you have a handful of people controlling Earth's entire oil supply so nobody prospers.

I want to get excited about other energy sources but I think the biggest priority when considering these options would be to ensure its safety so nobody can "own" it. Patents, ore, wells, etc needs to all be public domain in order for us to not repeat history.

I absolutely agree with you about fossil fuels. They are a menace. They are dangerous to mine, to refine, and to use in both the cumulative sense and the immediate sense. They burn, they explode, they give off dangerous byproducts during refinement and useage, and whats even worse is that they make nations which depend on them for vast portions of thier income incredibly weak in the event of supply issues.
Take haulage firms for instance. Thier entire business relies on being able to purchase fuel for thier vehicles, to get them from A to B in good order, and deliver the goods they are transporting. Same with busses, cabs, ambulances , fire appliances and police cars. When the fuel price rises, that brings organisations and businesses which rely on fuel to thier knees. People are made redundant on the basis that thier bosses are being made to choose between a mans job, and the fuel for a truck . Private vehicle owners are being made to choose between the vehicle that gets them to work, and the food that makes them ready to do the job in the first place.
However, if an engineering solution were found, that meant that vehicles use power from water , no one could charge for the fuel at all! It would be a case of just finding a water source, even the sea, or rain water! The oil producing nations, and the tycoons would be absolutely powerless (finaly) and perhaps the world could turn away from corperate control, and move back to thinking moral more important than fiscal issues.
Further to that, with a by product which has exactly no negative effect on the atmosphere, the health of the planet or the people, it would also be a step toward that cleaner future we all dream of.
HOWEVER, with regards to this new fuel, they are wasting resources on it. Its pointless. Why not just use water power instead? Phase out the old engines entirely over x years and replace them with water driven ones?

Beautiful thread, I suspect the science forums are going to start ramping up now as we open newer technologies of the future at exponential rates in the next 36-42 months. Lots going on on many levels.

Good time to be a learned sovereign being.

Water as Fuel: 1992 Stanley Meyer Interview Found - A newly discovered 37-minute video shows Meyer walking around his dune buggy showing and describing the different components that make his purported water-fueled vehicle work. (PESN and BeforeItsNews; February 3, 2011)

I watched this video and think it is great .I am not a scientist but can believe that science has known allot more than what has been allowed into the public . You can follow the links threw peswiki to get to the video ...peace pesn.com...

Believe me my friend,I couldn't of said it better myself and I agree with what you have posted 100%!!! I know all about what you speak of,I actually deliver food to restaurants right now for a living.
( it is rough out here finding stable gainful employment...anyone out there struggling financially I feel your pain and I hope you the best in your endeavor finding a job, feeding your family and paying the bills! )

I know the reliance on fuel costs, especially when driving a diesel-fueled truck!

When I sit back, truly inspect and contemplate our worlds issues:the greed, economic infrastructure failures, children starving, wars where innocents on both sides are dying and all based on lies, control and power...It makes me literally sick to my stomach.

How and why this is allowed and happens is beyond my reasoning and understanding presently..I do not think I will ever find a justification for these atrocities. It should never get to this point.period

I can only hope and try to remain optimistic that we as a species, collectively can make a stand and change the way things are before it is too late.

There is only one way that things with regard to the way we power our personal and works vehicles , can ever change for the better. It is not an easy option, nor is it an option free of major sacrifice, hardship, suffering, hunger, and strife.
The only way anything will change for the better in this regard, is if enough people just turn round, and regardless of the pain it will cause them, refuse to use motor vehicular transport, or any means of transport that involves the burning of any fossil or carbon fuel. The problems with this solution are obvious, including as they do the fact that people rely on thier ability to travel , in order to either arrive at, or perform the duties of thier work, and the fact that virtualy all produce, edible or disposable, has to be transported from nation to nation, and in the US and other large nations , state to state. These are just the obvious problems.
However, without this blanket planet wide boycott, the oil companies will rake in enough money to continue thier production and retain thier power. We need to choke off the supply of money to big oil, and even smaller oil and fuel makers, so that they cease to have the monopoly on power provision, and so that independant manufacturers and larger vehicle manufacturers alike see the potential benifits of producing engines which run on totaly carbon free , and more importantly cheap/free fuel. Water!
However, as long as the manufacturers and the oil companies collude to keep both sectors afloat, despite the increasing disconnect between the price of fuel ,and a persons monthly salary, and despite the devastating effects of continuing our obsession with burning fossil fuels, any end to the tyrany which that industry represents will be pretty bloody far off! Thats what is so elegant about the noose the oil companies have around the neck of our world. In order to defeat thier monopolous agenda, a man would need to starve himself , and his family through lack of work and lack of transport, and so few people have the sheer bloody mindedness, and the cold determination enough to actualy do it, that even if a fair few folks DID go ahead and refuse to travel a yard until thier engines ran for free, it wouldnt be enough to stop the oil companies. Only total stoppage of thier funding can ruin the bastion of total control they have built for themselves, and they know it is the only scenario that could play out against them which might work, just as they know it is a scenario which is astronomicaly unlikely to occur.
