Astronomers have spotted a strange new solar system with small "puffy" planets packed in close orbit to their sun - about 2,000 light years away.

The team at NASA has named the system Kepler 11, after the orbiting Kepler space telescope that spotted it.

"One of the most striking features about the Kepler 11 system is how close the orbits of the planets are to one another," they wrote in their report.

How big and hot is the sun in which the planets orbit?
This system could very well have life on it... Do you think that we can ever develop a satellite telescope that can see through a distant planets atmosphere and capture images much like the ones we have of mars today?

The pedant in me has to point out that it is not technically a 'Solar' system, but a 'Planetary' system. We are in the Solar system because our Sun is 'Sol'.

Kepler11 is a sun-like star, orbited by 6 planets and

and several hundred more planet candidates

All six worlds are larger than the Earth with the largest ones similar in size to Neptune and Uranus

Of the remaining planet candidates, 54 are in the habitable zone of their stars, which means liquid water may be present on their surface, and the environment is likely to be suitable for earth-like lives. Five of these bodies are near Earth-size.

i have a question, why is it we know about planets 60.000+ light years away and now and only now they have discovered these planets a mere 2.000 light years away, i think they know more about these planets than what they let on

im sorry mate i have no idea how big or hot the sun is? and as for the telescope idea i think thats a bit of a longshot but why not? maybe we already can! who knows what tptb know and dont let on
sorry if it seems i havent put alot of effort in the post but i saw it on the news last night just as i was going to bed and just quickley posted it as i know theres alot of people on here (myself included) that are fascinated by this sort of thing,i will follow this though and post what i find

even if we ever found a planet like ours that had oxygen and water and everything it needed to sustain life,would we ever be able to get there?..i mean 2000 light years away aint exactly a short ride away,any clever people out there know how fast you we need to travel to get there in a "reasonable" time?

even if there isnt oxygen or water doesnt mean there cant be life there, just because we think these are the basic fundamental elements of life doesnt mean they are just because they are the fundamental elements on earth.

One step closer to finding our place in the galaxy let alone the universe.

im going to have to agree with you here seems a bit odd that a planet that far away can be found yet some a shorter distance were overlooked...

more information/research anyone has on this would be a nice read

I think the idea is we know water and oxygen can sustain life as it sustains most life on earth so what better place to start looking for life than places that have water and oxygen. Nobody is saying life cannot arise anywhere else. Looking for water and oxygen is just the most logical place to look.

I do not think it odd that this new discovery had been overlooked in the past due to the fact that the universe is big (cue HHGTTG) and telescopes only see a pinhole portion of it. I feel that now that they may be a connection to the previous NASA announcements of planet x/niburu scenario. As we near 2012 there has been quite alot of these major discoverys so I am wondering if we are being set up for the biggest of them all thats going to change humans perception of the universe once and for all in regard to intelligent lifeforms other than ourselves.
