The Fabulous Thunderbirds

I was wondering if any of the members had any information or could share and sightings of Thunderbirds.

I am finding it really hard to find any pictures of information about them on the web.

i had a small handcarved totem made by pacific northwest indians and was called a thunderbird. it wasnt an eagle, they specifically said it was a thunderbird totem.

could this thunderbird have reached up into the pacific northwest?

There are many stories of Thunderbirds from the Indians.

I would be interested to see this totem you have.

i'm trying to find it right now. i know i still have it, i just dont know where it is.

once i do find it i'll get a pic and post it here. i got it when i was a kid, i forgot what its suppose to do but i think its a spiritual protection totem pole. its like 8-9 inches tall handcarved and painted a little.

no problem i saw the title and immediately thought of the totem i got when i was in seattle.

i got it while visiting an island near seattle. had a bunch of salmon (like a traditional indian meal i suppose). looked like it was all run by indians and picked up a thunderbird totem pole before leaving, they did have other totems like the eagle, bear and so on but for some reason i wanted the thunderbird, so i got it. an indian told me the story behind the totem (thunderbird legend actually) and said the thunderbird would watch over me. too bad i forgot the story. this was over 20 years ago...oh well at least i still have the totem!

i also had a clay "pipe" from mexico that i could play music with....not sure where that went though...got that near the pyramid of montezuma. ( you gotta see those pyramids!)

I remember seeing a t.v. program about thunderbirds. There was footage that some guy took while on a fishing trip in northern cali i think. it was from the late 70's and in 8mm film. it showed two huge birds taking flight from where they were perched in a tree. I remember also that they had reports of thunderbirds in mexico and all the way down to brazil, and all throughout the central united states. They are supposedly called thunderbirds because they are usually seen right before a thunder storm. Scientists hypothesise that the reason they are most often seen before a storm is that the wind currents are strong and that these strong winds are almost a necessity for birds of this size to achieve and maintain flight with minimal energy expenditure. there have even been reports of thunderbirds attacking children and dogs here in the united states. Hope this helps..this is a very interesting subject.

your totem pole story reminds me of the time I drove up to Oregon. There was a rest stop with a huge bigfoot totem pole. It was awesome.

not yet, i;'m still looking. i cant find my toys (stop laughing, i wont let go of my childhood) and its with my toys. when i find my toys i'll find it. i know i have it though. dont worry, i'll get it.

Doesn't this look kinda like a "Thunder Bird" ?

From what I have heard about them, they are apparently ALOT bigger than that. The animal in the picture looks to be a hawk of some kind.

i once posted those, the first is probably an african stork. the second well im not sure and the third im also not sure. there is also a picture of a little boy holding a dead pterodactyl that looks extremely real.

I posted this on another thread, but I'll post it again here. I don't know if was a thunder bird or something else, but it's one of the few things that seem to fit.
I'm an avid hunter & I don't get scared easy. The only time i remember being petrified was a few years ago back home. I was hunting one day, not a bird or animal in sight. I remember thinking 'that's weird! Usually there's 63 zillion birds & 4 zillion game!' I heard an ear splitting shriek & looked up to see a flying...something... that had a 8-9 foot wingspan. Not too sure what it was. I saw it skin a tree & fly off towards the pond. I was tempted to follow it, but decided against it. I didn't feel like being gutted. I've seen eagles. It wasn't an eagle. I've seen bats. It was too big to be a bat. It wasn't anything I know of out there & I was terrified. I'm an open minded septic & I decided to find some proof so no one would laugh me off (what i found got me laughed off anyway.). I ran up the tree it skinned & found some rainbow colored flight feathers & a ton of green down, okay, I guess it's a parrot... No. Too big, unless there's a huge rainbow-colored giant a** parrots in the middle of Kansas. I hit the web Googling like crazy & rummaging through all of the zoology, bird, endangered animal books in the collection from my mom. The only things i could come up were a giant a** rainbow-colored parrot (Not likely) A hoax (I'm in the middle of no where! Not likely to happen!) & some sort of thunder bird or amphitheater dragon. I've compared the feathers to blue jays, robins, cardinals, parrots, chicken, quail, etc. & found nothing that matched them.

I still don't like going to that spot. I try to avoid going to the pond in case that was a Mrs. Terrifying feathered bird thingy & there was a Mr. Terrifying feathered bird thingy & baby terrifying feathered bird thingies. I still have the feathers & down locked in a box in my bedroom. That shriek is the stuff of nightmares. I'm terrified that it'll come back & gut me.

my camera's out of batteries so i'll post some pictures after i get some more. My phone camera is dead, i get blobs out of it.

Wasn't there a story in the states of a supposed thunderbird that attempted to carry off a child from a garden?

I remember reading somewhere of a sailor that swore he saw a large Bird diving for seals.

Over here in Europe we have a bird legend of the Roc that is supposedly big enough to hunt elephants and whales
