Earthquake Myths
We can go directly to the USGS site and learn more about the data collection methods instead of looking at plots provided at 3rd party sites.

Although it may seem that we are having more earthquakes, earthquakes of magnitude 7.0 or greater have remained fairly constant throughout this century and, according to our records, have actually seemed to decrease in recent years.

Earthquake Stats
Remember that there is a difference between earthquakes and located earthquakes. More earthquakes are located because of more stations and also because of more compute power going through the data and working out more quakes.

Fair enough. I agree with your message and your methods, so I'm not going to quibble

I was feeling that feeling of impending doom before 9/11, and it grows stronger every year... Maybe it will have nothing to do with earthquakes.

It isn't. I don't know why this 2012 story is believable. Knowledge of something can change that something (and maybe this is what they're relying on), but this is unbelievable (in the literal sense).

2012 is an interesting topic. But there are no facts and only theories. People should quit fooling themselves and realize this is an internet hoax that blew up in 2000. People are going to feel so stupid when December 22nd they wake up and realize we are still alive hahaha. The world will end million and millions of years from now. So sit back, sip a nice cold beer, and live your lives to the fullest and quit hyping up 2012 to scare us all.

We're not trying to scare you, but to us, the thought of sitting back and doing nothing is atrocious. People who 'live for the moment' are likely to die the next moment without accomplishment. 2012 cannot be proven or disproven until...2012, so it's pointless to argue it. Drink as much cold beer as you want. Maybe it won't be 2012, but someday, the system will collapse. Some will be ready and some will not. Some who are not ready will be lucky, and some will not. But who is destined to overcome, to resist the oppressors, and to rebuild civilization?

My answer to that is anybody who gives themselves that responsibility has such a destiny. 2012 is an opportunity to change the world. Everything will become clear and people will have a chance to decide where they stand and watch as everything they thought they knew crumbles around them.

Don't be afraid of the unknown.

I agree with Ray, living life to the fullest is the only thing you can do, sitting around preparing yourself for what may come and living life in fear of a prediction or theory is living in fear and not the living in the moment. Why is 2012 the time to change the world, why not today? If we all do what's right everyday you wouldn't have to wait for something to come and change the world for you. I think people that want or think the world is crumbling around them are just people unhappy with their current life and want change but are afraid to change it themselves so they attach to predictions and theories not realizing the whole time this is what your oppressor wants. If you want change get out there and change things instead of waiting for 2012.

Cheers to your cold beer Ray.

2012 cannot be proven or disproven until...2012, so it's pointless to argue it.

That is a fallacy that has been derived from the "nothing is provable claim". It's false. Not true at all. The reason for this claim is that some things are not determinant therefore all things are not. That's really, really sloppy thinking.

Actually, most of the claims of 2012 are demonstrably false. It's not pointless to show that this is so. The argument really relies on the lack of knowledge of the individual. The argument is actually, "I don't know or understand therefore everyone else does not know or understand."

Maybe it won't be 2012, but someday, the system will collapse.

This is the wait forever effort and maybe I will be vindicated. Sorry, not happening either.

Don't be afraid of the unknown.

This may be your credo, but it is not you. You are afraid of 2012 and you openly state that you are preparing for the unknown, which is clearly a baloney effort.

You have never addressed the fact that disasters have been claimed for 200, 2003, 2007, and now 2011, 2012, and 2013. My guess is that you weren't aware that you were supposed to be freaked out about these other years.

I also don't think you are prepared to do what you claim. I don't think you have ever been camping. I don't think you have ever pent overnight in cold weather in a tent or other unheated structure. You come off a a neophyte. You need to get out there and practice suffering in the cold. For the love of pete the winter is almost over. If you want to get in some practice time do it now.

A neophyte? I admit that my political and theoretical knowledge exceeds my scientific and practical knowledge, but do I really seem that way? Has my confession of my age altered your mental perception of me, or do I actually come across as a newbie who doesn't know what I'm doing?

In my thread (which got deleted because there is a rule against recruiting) I did address those other years. 2013 will be a year of ongoing disaster. The cataclysm may start in December of 2012, but it certainly won't end there. As for the other years, none of them had enough evidence. As for Y2K, I was very aware. I sat in my stroller with my sippycup and my "y2k bug" stuffed animal waiting for it to happen. And it would have, if the programmers hadn't fixed things. I am aware that it might start in 2011 and I am speeding up my preparation effort.

And, for the last time, I am not afraid. I think I'm somehow incapable of feeling fear... I like danger (I know that's insane and weird, but it's true) and I would be content to run around in the anarchy with minimal preparations taking pictures and doing whatever I wanted, but my entire life's goal could depend on the 2012 opportunity so I can't pass it up. So, although I laugh at danger like an obnoxious child, I've decided to take this one seriously and see if it will prove advantageous. I've been accused of wanting it to happen, which I most certainly don't... I would do anything to stop it because I don't want 90% of the population dead, but I'm glad that I was born at a time that will enable me to see the fulfillment of all things, when the seemingly permanent systems are turned upside down. And I'm glad I have a chance to perhaps make a difference.

I have been camping...like 20 times. Where I live, it is rare to find someone who has never been camping. The idea of camping this winter is delightful, but unfortunately, I'm underage and my mom is a lazy 60-year-old computer programmer who would do no such thing.

i was telling my mate Andy about this 2012 end of the world stuff. he cut through it with his razor sharp logic.

me : look out for 2012, the worlds going to end

Andy : Again?

me: yep, its the end of the mayan civilization long count calendar supposedly thats the end of everything.

Andy: so this Mayan civilization. Are they still around?

Yes you do sound like a neophyte. Camping in the long term can be harsh. You can't choose to be a fair weather camper in the situation you envision. You have to be out there when the weather is less than ideal.

You had considered using an island for a base. Islands are easily isolated during the times that ice forms and breaks up. That could be a bad thing if supplies run low. The idea of an RV is attractive till you learn that it gets 5 miles to 20 miles per gallon depending on the size of the vehicle and its maintenance. Consider getting around in bad conditions. A single wash out could stop you in your tracks.

My suggestion is to get out of the neophyte situation by getting out there and practicing suffering. That's being out in bad conditions to see what it's like.

Why would there be any red faces? This is a well known fault system that has produced large quakes in the past and still is producing large quakes after the larger quake.

To suppose that a quake is associated with the Mayan long count calendar comes from what?
