Breaking News: Stonehenge is discovered in America. Although hard to believe, this is actually a true story. In 2007, a team of archaeologists was hired to survey several ancient boat wrecks in the waters of Lake Michigan when they came across some large stones that were arranged in a circular pattern with one of the stones appearing to have a Mastodon carved into it. The stones were under approximately 40 feet of water and were detected using a new form of sonar. Numerous pictures included....

Why are there no underwater photos of the "stone formations"? Why only the sonar scan? That's potentially the easier story to corroborate than the mastodon claim.

Plus, why did they focus so much on the admittedly weak "mastodon" image in the stone? It looks like a random pattern in the rock - not something deliberate. I've seen images of Jesus on burned toast that are easier to make out than that elephant.

Me thinks someone is playing with us.

No, it's the real deal. I read about it on the archaeology list at the time. Still needs to be sorted out, but it's being further investigated.

That's nice and all, but it's been over 3 years since that article. Surely they would have figured more information out by now.

So email the principal investigator and ask him. Just download a Google.

Here's a little more info from 2010. Mastodon?...

Specialists shown pictures of the boulder have asked for more evidence before confirming the markings are an ancient petroglyph, said Holley, an underwater archaeologist who teaches at Northwestern Michigan College in Traverse City.

"The difficulty I saw was that the features of what's interpreted as an engraving were so subtle, and they're not the only thing on the boulder," Fisher said in a phone interview.

"It's conceivable" that the image on the rock is a petroglyph, he said. "I'm intrigued enough to take another look."

Some -- although not the boulder -- were arranged in a circle. That could indicate human manipulation although it's unclear, said Rob Houston, a geology instructor at the college who has inspected the site.

It all sounds promising. But no one is stating any claims as fact just yet.
