The Scenario...

You wake to the sound of multiple gunshots. The entire world seems to be filled with the rapport of small arms fire. You run to your front door and look outside. Muzzle flashes and tracer rounds appear to be coming from all angles. The street, in front of your house is filled with smoke.

You notice, in a panic, that your electricity is not on.

As your mind begins to process the details you realize that, in one direction, you see police cars and military looking vehicles.

Looking in the other direction you see combatants dressed in camouflage clothing...

Peering into the light from the fire, you see this flag flying over those in camouflage.

Your mind is racing... You grab your portable, battery powered radio, in an attempt to find out what is going on, as your family huddles around you, frightened and panicking. Frustration overpowers you as you find that every radio station on the dial is broadcasting the same Emergency Alert System statement... A state of emergency exists and you are ordered to stay in your home. You have no idea, at all, what is actually going on.

There is open combat in your neighborhood. Nothing that you've heard of on the news, or in town, gave you any indication that this could happen. You don't know if this is a local phenomenon or if chaos has erupted everywhere. You only know what you can see with your own eyes.

You own a few guns. You have a modest supply of ammunition for those guns. You find yourself in immediate peril. You find your family in peril.

Looking at your family, with no real information to guide you.. What do you do???

What do you do?

************************************************************

This thread is a response to the many posts, here and elsewhere, regarding revolution, uprisings, civil unrest, etc.

There are many people who seem to be literally starved for such an event to occur. They chomp at the proverbial bit and stir up the pot to the best of their abilities. And while I do understand, and share, the frustration which leads to such sentiments, I do not share in the zealotry which accompanies them. To my thinking, violence is a last resort and one to be undertaken with great hesitance and forethought.

To me, those who promote such acts have not pondered the reality of them. They have not weighed the implications or the severity of the burden discussed.

Is the above what it would be like to wake up to a full on revolution in a western nation? Or is it what it would be like to wake up in the middle of a skirmish between the police and a rogue militia group?

How would one know the difference?

Would you trust that the police were there to protect you? Or would you automatically perceive the men in camouflage to be righteous saviors simply because they flew a flag associated, symbolically, with patriotism?

Do you stay in your house as the EBS signal instructed, protecting your family? Do you join in the battle waging outside of your door?

If so, on which side? And why?

I am interested, ATS, to see how others would deal with waking into this nightmare... I have my ideas of what I would do. What are yours?

Hug the family, pick up my weapons and ammunition to capacity at closest proximity, and cover the door.

Once it's over, if we're not dead.... Since being dead is the most likely scenario...... I would more than likely hide out for a few days in the house, in certain places until such a time as it was calm enough to reoccupy the house. I would live off stored food for a year, and hope for rain water.

If I was not dead after a year of survival, I would prepare the land around me by knocking over fences and using mirrors to shine light on a nursery, grow crops where others mowed lawns before me, as it is the richest soil in the US these days, and look to a brighter future...

That is, if I didnt die at one of the many possible points that I could have.

I think most people don't have the ability to "take action". By the time it gets bad enough, they'll either be homeless, sick, or too hungry to fight.

And for those who are "prepared" - if they are smart, they'll stay out of "the fight" for as long as possible, but by the time the fight comes to them, they'll get overwhelmed by authoritarian powers.

At least, that's the way most of America will go down.

Im not trying to derail a thread .....All I will say is be careful what you post here because your words are permanant and could be used against you if the situation were to unfold as such.

Just sayin'....it's never a great idea to broadcast to the world what you will or wont do. Some things are best kept to one's own self.

Well.... I agree that a complete break down in essential services and everything else that would come with a revolution would be an awful thing to wake up to. But...

Do you really think that western governments are going to suddenly come to their senses and break out the 'get-out-of-run-away-capitalism-card' and slow and smoothly turn this flaming puppy around? We have passed the event horizon on our way to this black hole. The only thing that can save us would have to have more concentrated energy than the hole that is sucking us in by a long shot. What kind of energy do you think could extinguish such a power? voting? maybe a petition? OH OH, I KNOW, I KNOW..... a protest. ya that should do it.

I don't want to wake up to a revolution, I wanna wake up to a cataclysmic nightmare, that's when i'll know we are taking a step in the right direction

Agreed BlackOps719!

And to be clear, I am not fishing for replies which would incriminate anyone, now or tomorrow. This isn't an attempt to "out" closet revolutionaries.

I actually began this OP as a short story, at least in my imagination, and could not resolve the issue of how one would think, react, and logic in a scenario of chaos, when ones preconceived notions were put to the test.

I think that the important thing to do would be to leave your house, but stay close to it, in hiding. Watch who comes to your door, and how they react to no answer. If it is the camoflaged men, do they kick in the door and steal your supplies? If it is the militarized police, do they search the house for people and guns and then leave? I think that observing the two sides would be probably the first of importance.

At the same time, one would need to try to ascertain the cause for the trouble. If you just woke up and there was smoke in the streets and guns going off, your electricity doesn't work and the radio is playing an EBS, I would assume that a "terrorist" attack had happened, and that in lieu of that, the militarized police were going around door to door, collecting guns, and telling you where to register (be it post office or mall parking lot, stadium or nearby military base) as a citizen.

I guess I would have to wait and see if the police drove around telling people from bullhorns and PA speakers to go to the nearest registration building. I don't know. It's hard to say. Maybe wait it out at my house and see if a curfew is imposed.

Flag to a thought provoking, hypothetical situation.

Duly noted....and I didn't mean to doubt your intentions.

I was just pointing out for those who would get carried away with words that people are watching and reading their thoughts in a public community such as this, and as such best to keep it G rated.

It's rather pointess to ask an ATS member this question because this site informs the uninformed more readily than any other website, radio station, or t.v. channel in existance. I percieve this OP as an opportune government probe to classify American citizens, to further identify targets of concern for them.

With this statement Ive thus made myself the target, perhaps saving the life of a soul worthier than me with this gesture.

Honestly i would be on neither side, The Government has been screwing us over for decades and we never had the b***s to stand up against them when they were at their weakest. With every year that goes by the government and its army's become more powerful and our chances of defeating them are reduced. It's almost impossible now and to me the great awakening will be a great time of oppression and killing. A time when people will realize how Fkd up the government is.......Just when it's too late to retaliate. They will wipe us out during the revolution.

I would stack up as much ammo as i can and protect my family, Not joining any resistance...PERIOD. We let the monster grow now we gotta deal with it.

I know for me atleast i'd get the hell away from everyone I didn't know and trust. I wouldn't take sides with anyone for the time being as from the information provided it gives no indication of who may be in the right or wrong in my own opinion (as apposed to lawfully wrong or right).

Because it is the middle of the night, the doors and windows would all be closed and locked already with the window blinds down. We have several hand crank flashlights in convenient locations in our home and I would gather them up to keep them close at hand. I would then move my family to the location in the house the farthest away from doors and windows to minimize the danger of anyone being injured by errant rounds of ammunition, most likely the hallway in the middle of my home. I would then quickly gather my guns, load them fully, and keep them close also. There would be no way to be sure about what was actually happening outside, so the most logical and rational thing to do would be to sit still and hope the skirmish outside ends quickly with no damage to my property or my family.

My only responsibility in a scenario like this would be the safety of my family. I could care less who is flying what flag at a moment like that. Just because the flag might have some symbol on it that looks vaguely patriotic does not mean the group flying it are somehow in the right. They could be flying a flag with Mickey Mouse on it, but I'm sure as heck not going to automatically believe they're The Mouseketeers. And conversely, just because the other group looks like law enforcement doesn't necessarily mean they are "the good guys". Their fight is with each other, and I would want no part of it. The only thing I could be sure of at that moment is that the people huddled behind me in that hallway are my loved ones, who I need to protect and keep safe. If my home were to be forcibly entered, things would get a lot more complicated.

Thank you dalloway!

That was exactly where my thoughts became hung up in pondering this... The fact that we no longer have the type of society that the initial American Revolution occurred in. These days if we know our neighbors names it's almost amazing, much less knowing their leanings or politics.

A general note about the thread: While I find some of the statements quite amusing, I can assure you all, I am NOT Uncle Sam, or even on his Facebook friends list!
