Turn on the news, President Mubarak is currently giving a speech to the people of Egypt.

This could be very critical in how events transpire from now. If he resigns then the people have won, if he agrees to reforms then the people have probably won, but he could clamp down even more and the people must fight harder.

So far it sounds to me like he is saying the people need to shut up and stop criticizing him.

Where the hell has this man been for the past 3 days??

Rhetoric, false promises, and empty hopes. I believe he is too little toolate. He can abolish the government, but remain in power?! He veiled some threats in there as well.

Nope, no resignation. Just saying exactly what he thinks the people want him to say. He just said he's always been geared towards economic reform, yet he's been in power almost 30 years, and decides this now? Lots of key phrases included in this speech; "public good", "my fellow citizens", "I am always attached to the suffering of the Egyptian people." and "I have taken the side of the poor people and will always do so." Seriously, just a load of cliches.

Maybe I'm being cynical, and he really will take note, but like I say, if he really stood for any of these things, he would have have shown it during the 30 years prior. I suppose he's come to realise he needs to throw a few carrots to the paupers, if he is to remain atop of his "throne"- let's just hope that's what he does, and doesn't respond with an iron fist instead.

ETA: Although, he did just say he's going to order the government to step down, and he's going to name a new one tomorrow..

Why is he giving a speech at like 12:30am if he wants to hit the masses there? Seems like more manipulation. He didn;t even want to go through with this, he wanted to run.

The Egyptians are mad as heck...

Yeah the president of Egypt is underestimating the power of a fed up people. Their water must not have fluoride.

Thank you OP I would have not remembered to switch the TV on if it wasn't for you.

Anyone hear the CNN guy say "many of the people would like to loot into that building and burn it down"', "the police as well will probably decide to run"?

Only 400 people now but people are storming the area. Riot police will be busy.

To be fair every government says, shut up, stop critizing, pay your taxes, reproduce.
