Tungsten has the highest melting point of any element at around 6100 F. Its boiling point is around 10,000 F.

A nuclear fireball burns at several millions of degrees.

There is no known solid that can withstand millions of degrees without being boiled into vapor.

It would turn solid diamond into vapor.

I feel quite confident that by the time this becomes a problem, the technology will have arrived that will easily destroy the asteroid.

For example, high intensity laser beam from Earth.

so does this mean that no one knows exactly how close this object will first come in 2012/2013 ?

It sounds like near misses happen all the time though. IMO, It seems more likely that we would be hit by something with little to no warning at some point regardless of what happens in 2036.

I wouldn't worry about this at all.

One W88 warhead would completely vaporize it. The "fireball" of the warhead is over 1 mile and well into the millions of degrees. Hot enough to boil solid iron into vapor instantly. The shockwave would then disperse the vapor into space.

If we can hit a 3 meter satellite, we can hit a 450 meter meteor.

Should be easy enough. It will only be traveling 16,000 miles per hour.

I wish that people would stop using the term "meteor" to describe large chunks of rock. A meteor is generally nothing larger than a grain of sand. 99942 Apophis is an ASTEROID.

Not sure what they are going from, but it does a near pass in 202something and depending on the path it takes there, it's a near miss or impact in 2036.

Non fear mongering scientists are saying sit tight, no worries. At the very least we can't say anything til it passes

Still something to watch.

Cut it out now, give it a rest for atleast a decade mate, this one has been strenuous enough and it's not even 2012! I've now got a shed full of tinned fruit and bottles of water (pending 2012 of course)

I want a shirt that keeps a running tally on how many apocalypses my resilient soul has seen

I've realised the apocalypse will always hang above our heads like a storm cloud an that I don't have the required spare time to dedicate to research counter facts and opinions. Conspire away guys, I concede for atleast this evening.

P.S my bad on the tacky mobile uploads.
