Nothing new here..this has "been underway" now for decades. It's probably inevitable. Too many people still hide money in their mattresses for their taste, I'm sure, but the corporate lobbies will eventually win the day and there are enought megalomaniacs and ignorant servants in government who will support them.
Remember that one movie (Total Recall, maybe?) where the hero was on the run and they were able to cut off all his funds in the flip of a switch? Well they can and do already do that with our credit and debit cards. But imagine if that was our only way to pay. Pretty concerning.
Equally concerning is that everything you do pay for by card goes to data-mining operations that can tell both corporations and the government everything about you...right down to the books you read and the brand of toilet paper you prefer and including what you smoke and drink.
Pretty hairy when you think your health or life insurance company can track habits they can then used to deny you coverage for, What's worse is that 1.) the government lets corporations get away with this and 2.) the government is already providing far too freely our personal information that when put together with information that you might so callously and personally provide thinking it doesn't matter on sites like FaceBook helps them complete their picture of you.
Also, this cashless society would make this a very interesting world indeed if a solar storm were to knock out electronics and mess up all access to funds, wouldn't it?edit on 1/24/2011 by ~Lucidity because: (no reason given)

Exactly. It will happen...and it's definitely both concerning and to keep our eyes on (yours are open lol) but there is still a way to go...I hope.
