No, it was the regulatory agency that didn't do due diligence involving oversight. It's sits squarely on the shoulders of the EPA. They will stomp on some poor farmer, or small business owner for infinitesimal infractions and put them out of business but ignore the hard infractions where they might have to explain themselves in court with corps that have deep pockets to fight them! You can't excel in the GS ratings if you don;t have convictions, so the easy targets that can't fight back are the norm!

You said America was to blame. The EPA is most certainly NOT America and most likely is NOT supported by MOST of America! This agency is responsible for more job loss than Bush or Obama!

I spent a little time reading Apple's site reguarding their carbon footprint and have to say I'm a little impressed with it. Seems like they have made great efforts to reduce their carbon footprint and have actually completely eliminated toxic materials like lead, BFR, PVC, mercury, and arsenic from their products.

Granted I'll take anything a monster corp like Apple says with a grain of salt but nonetheless I have ended up with the feeling Apple is being used. Those smelting factories that are soo bad are not only smelting for Apple but for dozens of other companies which leads me to believe that Apple, being the most popular around the world and worthy of grabbing attention, has been singled out to garner attention.

I say go ahead and eat the Apple.

If Apple disappeared today they would be replaced tommoro and thats just the reality of it. We need to change the laws that govern these monster corporations all over the world so they have no place to run to for cheap and environmentally damaging manufacturing. Lets kill the cancer and then we can deal with its growths.

I don't buy it.....completely. There is probably some truth in there. Still, like I said those smelting factories have many customers, not just Apple, so obviously Apple has been singled out due to their popularity to garner attention.

According to the article Apple was singled out for being completely secretive regarding where their components come from. Buying components from a total slime hole while not actually creating those components themselves does not make them environmentally friendly.

When questioned about the incident and another similar one by various Chinese NGOs, Apple refused to confirm whether or not its suppliers were at all responsible. It did say that it regularly investigates and audits its suppliers to confirm that they are in compliance with Apple standards, but offered no further cooperation.

I have never read anything that says Apple will not reveal who their suppliers are, just that they won't release internal information from those suppliers. I'm pretty sure the Chinese governement knows who they are and has the ability to audit and inspect them. Again, this is a Chinese problem that begins with their own laws. Also, right beside Apple at the bottom of that list is Nokia. Do you think its a coincidence that the 2 largest mobile phone producers are the largest polluters. I think not.

Nokia could and should have been singled out as much as Apple but like I said, Apple is "it" right now so they were singled out.

Your right that all the multinational companies should be under the gun here but it always seems to be Apple that is focused on due to their popularity. I'm not trying to diminish Apple's shortcomings but just pointing out they are being used as the "badguy" to attract more attention to the environmental movement in China. They could just as easily have chosen Nokia as an example but they have nowhere near the world wide popularity of Apple.

If the Chinese were free to criticize their own government without being thrown in jail, I'm sure they would be attacking the Party instead of Apple.

A person who does not steal might nevertheless be tempted by a great deal for something that "fell of a truck". After all it was somebody else that stole it not them. Human morals can be pretty flimsy sometimes.

The same goes for cheap products manufactured in ways dangerous to the environment or the workers. Most people really don't want to know about that stuff. Out of sight - out of mind.

It is really hard to get people worked up about something on the other side of the world at any rate but even harder when it might risk them not having this nice shiny toy to play with -- sucks but it's human nature.
