On a warm summer night in 1990, I was driving back home to the foothills. Thrilva and I had gone to the drive inn to watch Ghost. It was a slow mushy
movie, so we did a little more than eat popcorn and Red Vines. It was hot even though it was getting on midnight, so we had the windows down in my
'64 Mustang. Thrilva had her feet up on the dash and was smoking her Virginia Slim, when I sung out "My darlinnn, I huuunger forrr your love." She
gave me a big grin and ran her fingers up the back of my neck, asking if she was as pretty as Demi Moore. I told her she was and she better looking
legs to boot.
Well the got her talking about her modeling career, and going to New York someday and getting discovered. I gave her my usual answer, "tomorrow
honey." She knew when tomorrow comes, I would remind her that I said "tomorrow." So she slapped my thigh and said "I'm serious, I really want to
go to New York" yada yada yada. We were still talking about saving up money and the cost of airfare, hotels and fancy photos when I pulled into the
driveway.
Thrilva wanted to feed the poor dog and all I wanted was a cold beer. I don't think ten minutes went by and she said "don't stay up too late"
and off to bed she went. I turned the TV off, and and tuned in Art Bell Coast to Coast. There was usually some nut on there with a tall tale. Art
would try to accent their craziness by asking wacky leading questions. When Art would run out of steam, there was always some anonymous caller on the
"West of the Rockies line" or the dreaded "Wild card line" to get the guest all riled up again.
However, the guest that Saturday night was a pretty intelligent woman. She was going on about how she teaches people to control their dreams. She
said if you couldn't do that, you were basically living a confused life. So, incidentally your dreams are a reflection your outlook on daily life. It
made sense to me, and Art kept saying the phone lines were lit up, but never took any calls. The woman just kept on talking about how everyone dreams
and it should be an enlightening experience. You could dream in colors, talk to people and fly too. All this was possible, providing your life was
hunky dory.
I guess it was about one in the morning when I shut it off and went to bed. I was laying there thinking about how the hell I was going to afford a
week in New York. I really didn't want to go, I already had my fill of big city's. Thrilva was never going to let up on trying to go either. The
last thing that ran through my head was a big gloomy city with a million people all in a hurry.
I woke up the next morning to a bunch of Blue Jays squawking in the front yard. I got dressed and went out to see what was bothering them. Thrilva
was in her yellow sundress out on the grass throwing bread crumbs everywhere. There must have been a hundred birds out there just having a ball. There
were of course the Blue Jays, but there were Robbins and Finches all mixed in enjoying the bread.
Thrilva turned around, and with the biggest smile said " New York, here we come". I walked over to her with my head down. I thought she was
going to suggest selling the Mustang. To my surprise, she grabbed my hand and we started lifting up. When we cleared the trees, we started flying
east. At first thought I thought we were going to fall and crash. I was amazed and asked "how are we doing this?" She laughed and said to me "it's
easy silly, just move your hands like this." Suddenly we were flying side by side over the rolling hills lined with blue streams, and fields of all
these rainbow colored flowers.
It was a beautiful day with a blue sky and a warm breeze. We were about a hundred feet above the ground, laughing and pointing stuff out to each
other. After an hour or so, I was good at controlling the flight with only my hands. We had flown over countless towns and hundreds of fields when
Thrilva yelled out to me "let's go down there" she pointed at a small town on a hillside. It had five or six roads leading to a large roundabout
with a park inside of it. There was a white gazebo inside the park with a bunch of people walking around. We landed on the roundabout and thankfully
there wasn't a car in sight.
Thrilva was doing cartwheels on the road! I walked up to a man standing on the corner and asked "did you see me fly in?" He calmly replied
"yes" as he turned to walk away. Thrilva came skipping over to me an said "lets walk, this is such a nice town." We didn't get far when a lady
said "Hello" from a front porch. We waved and said "Hi" back. The woman then asked us if we would like to come inside for fried chicken. "Sure,
we would love to" yelled Thrilva, as she tugged my arm towards the gate.
There was must have been at least a dozen people in there already. Some were drinking and some were at the table eating chicken out of wicker
baskets. There was homemade lemonade, bread and cherry pie. We ate quite a lot and met almost everyone there. There was this man in the living room
who was just reading a book. I went over and asked him if he knew that this was a dream. He replied with a smile "you bet, isn't it grand?" I
nodded at him keeping an eye out for Thrilva. I paned the room, thinking how nice everyone was acting.
That is when I noticed these two men sitting by the kitchen window. I just couldn't focus on there faces, they were blurry and dark. The more I
tried to see them, the more I couldn't. I made my way for Thrilva and got her out of there fast. I knew this was a dream, but those dark faces had me
really worried. When we got to the sidewalk and closed the gate behind us, I turned to see that a handful of the folks had came out to the front porch
to say goodbye. We said thanks and waved them goodbye. The sun was still high in the sky as we walked towards the park, hand in hand. I felt uneasy
being there, so I took one fast step and we were flying right over the gazebo in a flash. We flew over countless small towns, all the time smiling and
headed east.
It seemed like we reached New York city within an hour. Thrilva was pointing out where each bridge led. She knew a lot of the buildings too. I
only knew where I was when I saw the Statue of Liberty. I yelled "come on, I'll race ya." We flew a few circles around it and landed on the crown.
It was a sight to behold. The sun was setting and we were tired from the day. I didn't want to meet any strange characters and suggested that we
sleep on top of the Twin Towers, for privacy. She agreed and we flew to the north tower. We peered over the edge at the people down on the street.
They were going everywhere, like ants. We hadn't seen any cars, birds, boats or planes all day. When I brought it up to her, she didn't seem to mind
at all. The sun seemed to bounce off of the ocean and ascend back into the sky, just as I shut my eyes.
I awoke a few hours later alone on that roof. It was already getting hot, so I flew down to the street and landed on the sidewalk, like a feather
touching down. I asked the first lady I saw if she knew where Thrilva was. She said "turn around young man." I turned to see my Thrilva talking the
ear off a fruit stand owner. I walked up behind her and stole the apple she was holding and flew back to the tower rooftop. She was right on my tail
with a whole basket full of fruit. We ate a little bit of it as we stared at the ocean. She leaned over and gave me a kiss, then she asked me "can we
go home now?" I said "sure let's go on home." We didn't stop to many times and made it to California in a couple hours. She never even mentioned
the word "modeling", so I never brought it up. We landed right on our lawn and just sat there on the grass, throwing out bread for all these
birds.
The morning sunshine must have woke me up. Rusty immediately came in the bedroom, put his paws up on the bed and licked my face. I called out for
Thrilva. She said "I'm fixing pancakes, are you hungry honey?" I then sang out "My darlinnn, I huuunger forrr your love"
