"Mexican Police Capture Leader of Zetas Drug Cartel

AFP) – 2 hours ago

"MEXICO CITY — Mexican police have detained a suspected regional leader and founder of the notoriously ruthless Zetas drug gang in southern Mexico, the public security ministry said on Tuesday.

Flavio Mendez, nicknamed "The Yellow One," was one of the founders of the group and on a list of Mexico's 37 most dangerous criminals, with a reward of 15 million pesos (around one million euros) on his head, said Ramon Pequeno, head of the anti-drug division of the federal police"...

Finally there is some progress..... Ok one Mexican drug cartel leader down, and six more to go.... Now if the Mexican police can just keep him in prison, that will be an even more remarkable accomplishment.

Will the famous or infamous "El Chapo" be next?

"El Chapo", as some of you may remember, formerly made the Forbes list as one of the wealthiest men in the world.

While it is no doubt good, it said he was one of the founders, not the founder. Another high ranking member will simply step up. You want to really make progress, then decriminalize drugs and watch the cartels go down in flames.

I would be happier if i could trust LEAs regarding drug cartels...
If this guy got caught, it probably is because he had lost his position or influence withing the gang.
I'm convinced that most major anti-cartel agencies are the first "bussiness partners" of said cartels...

But, hey, at least one of these excuses for human beings was caught

You beat me to it it seems

But yeah, no amount of "warring" against the drug cartels will stop them. As long as there is demand, there will be supply. The only way to bring down the violent drug cartels is to legalize the drugs. Don't forget the alcohol prohibition, it didn't work then and it won't work now. Legalization will eventually make such drugs cheaper and safer over time... oh and the government can tax it

I dont think this will have any real consequences, just good PR for the Mexican government. Kind of like every couple of months in the US news we read that we have captured some high ranking al-queda operative, looks good for the press but that's about it.

If the US government truly wanted to tip the scale on the War on Drugs they would legalize cannabis thus cutting the cartel's profits and power and free up resources for the Drug Task Forces to concentrate on the more hard core drugs and arms trading.

The War on Drugs has never been in the best interest of the people nor based on common sense.

Still, it is a heavy accomplishment that he made the organisation go this far....
It is probably unkillable now, the leadership handing down the line as they get the top brass from time to time...no sense killing the goose that lays golden eggs though is there?
Until poverty and education in Mexico are addressed to the extent that the populace has a chance at decent income at home, there will be crime and illegal aliens storming the borders.
The best plan is legalise the weed......its proven harmless and safest recreational high.
better than booze.....
The cartels, the police, the DEA, the politicians, will all stay in bed on this one as long as the profits remain and the bribes keep comming....
