Smoking causes gene damage in minutes

www.rawstory.com

Those first few puffs on a cigarette can within minutes cause genetic damage linked to cancer, US scientists said in a study released Saturday.

In fact, researchers said the "effect is so fast that it's equivalent to injecting the substance directly into the bloodstream," in findings described as a "stark warning" to those who smoke.

The study is the first on humans to track how substances in tobacco cause DNA damage, and appears in the peer-reviewed journal Chemical Research in Toxicology, issued by the American Chemical Society.

And this stuff is still fully legal and available on every street corner, while things like vitamins and herbs are being yanked off shelves daily, in the name of 'safety'.

I do wonder however if this is specific to the tobacco used within cigarettes AND the types of chemicals they flood them with, or whether this is applicable to pure tobacco leaf, such as has been used for thousands of years in indigenous cultures?

Interesting study nonetheless, and another reason to quit if one has been smoking, and to never take it up in the first place if one has not. I would also show this to kids on every occassion, as a deterrent. heh

Well said, this is ridiculous.

Smoking is a putrid disgusting habit.

I hate it with every bone in my body.

I wish I could muster up the strength to quit.

From what I've read it's the processing and the chemicals used that seem to do the real damage. A lot more than what tobacco itself does. Nevertheless, that's not a green light for smoking or chewing tobacco. But it has it's uses such as a natural insecticide, paper, protein extraction, snake bites, etc.

OK... I'll make a deal with you. If we are all still here and alive, December 22. 2012,
we'll both quit.

Not a bad idea actually. Stick to it!

You're inhaling and exhaling actual smoke. Into your lungs. When would this ever be a good idea? If you inhale smoke from a fire, you cause irreparable brain damage relating to lack of oxygen, among other things. That's not even touching on the "other stuff" they put in packaged cigarettes.

It really does say a lot, about the backwards society we live in (America), where the FDA concentrates on raiding small-time farmers and pulling vitamins off the shelf. Yet hooch and cancer sticks are freely purchased in any convenience store in the country.

Smoke and drink if you want to, I don't mind, really. However, when there is a government agency telling me I shouldn't take vitamins and shouldn't partake in local free-range food because it is "unsafe"... well, THAT is what I have a problem with. Insane.

Two sides to every coin (tounge-in-cheek)..

The advantages...

* You will always have something to do with your hands.
* To avoid headaches later in the day, always have a cigarette first thing in the morning.
* If you work with explosives, you have a handy method of lighting the fuse.
* Smoking is a good career move if you want early retirement and would like to use up your sick leave.
* On New Years Eve you don't have to go out to the fireworks. Just dip your cigarette into a jar of ground up sparklers.
* Amuse your friends and be the life of the party by blowing smoke rings.
* Always discard your butts in flower pots and garden beds as it helps fertilise the plants and keeps insects away.
* Occasional house fires will help keep firemen employed.
* By buying cigarettes from corner stores, you help support local businesses and help retain the fabric of our society.
* At the beach, children can use the butts to decorate their sand castles.
* Annoy neighbours you don't like by staying home and smoking heavily.
* You will always have a good reason for loitering - "Officer, I'm just having a cigarette".
* Always smoke when you are pregnant. Your smoking helps the unborn baby prepare for the air pollution in the real world.
* When your neighbour's kids are too noisy, trigger their asthma by breathing smoke on them.
* By smoking heavily, you get out of boring work and will have plenty of short breaks during the day.
* Develop your cool image and fun-loving personality by being a smoker. Non-smoking is for wimps and wusses.
* You will have a good reason to paint the ceilings every three years.
* Why celebrate world no-tobacco day once a year, when every day can be celebrated as a pro-tobacco day.
* You will know when it's time to throw out your old lounge suite by the number of burn marks.
* Smoking is an adult custom. Add years to how old you look by smoking heavily.
* If you run out of smokes late at night, help the taxi industry by getting them to deliver your smokes to the door.
* You can demand more services and benefits from the government because you have paid more in taxes.
* Help keep the bush fire brigades trained and ready for any emergency by throwing lighted butts from your car window.
* Keep your weight down by smoking cigarettes instead of eating them.

Peace

Thanks, I hope to. It's kind of weird, cause I don't smoke at work, in my car, in restaurants but only at home and not that much. I don't even smoke while on the computer. Not coordinated enough to smoke and type.

Natural tobacco is a medical herb. It can be used and smoked without much concern.

However, industrial tobacco is laced with countless dangerous toxic chemicals. Many of them to increase the addictive qualities and increase sales.

However, I have heard many times before, and I wouldn't be surprised if it is indeed true, that it is illegal to grow your own tobacco plants without permits and also the safer more medically useful strains of tobacco are illegal completely.

This creates a monopoly for the industrial tobacco giants.

This news just makes me more annoyed at the people who live below me. They smoke non-stop, probably 3 packs a day each judging by the smell of the first floor. The smell crawls all the way up to the second floor, and then the third floor. It even seeps outside sometimes, and into the apartment through the vents on occasion.

Matching this news with the news that children who live in apartments with non-smoking parents still have tobacco metabolites in their blood from their neighbors' secondhand smoke, makes me a little pissed off.

Maybe this finding on genetic damage is the answer to my problems.

Smoking is turning into a real problem.Smoking is one of the worst thinges you can do because it damages you're body.I really don't know why some people smoke all it does is pumps chemicals into you're body and Damages you're lungs along with other thinges But, once you smoke it is hard to quit the habit. If people want to smoke and risk there long term health then that's fine with me but, smoking has consquences.

Stick to natural spirits. They don't add in the chemical additives found in practically every other commercial cigarette company. It's a bit more expensive, but you get about 50% more tobacco per cigarette. I smoke socially sometimes when I drink, so purchase about a pack a month. I will smoke a half of a cig in the time it takes most other people to smoke a full regular one. So I put it out and effectively get two packs for the price of one.

I need to quit my smokes too as I'm soon to be hitting the big 40, well in a few years anyway and I should be thinking more of my health. On the outside I'm fit enough but on the inside, id rather not know.

I was so againt smoking whilst i was a kid but picked up the habit by smoking too many joints. i started off with the bong but by the end of the night I'd be sharing the joints. Slowly the addiction kicked in.

I've given up on a few occasions but start back up when I've been out for a few beers and I'm a bit worse for ware.

I look forward to the days when I wash up my cups and glasses without having to empty fag ends out of the bottom. On a few occasions whilst appreciating the flavours of vodka and coke, i've picked up the wrong glass and necked a few used fag ends with the dregs with whatever was in that glass.
Maybe I should wash up more but on a weekend the chores go out the window.
