Intro to some fiction that I've been doing in bits for several years now. Just posting it incase anyone might like it.

Near the southern edge of Protocity, a man known to some as simply the Sage, steps outside with a cup of sake and sits on the bench near his front
door.
The view from his garden is an almost unobstructed one of the city's skyline, and it's a clear day apart from the slight haze of smog over parts of
the city that the sunlight reveals. Most of the bigger buildings visible from where the Sage sits are located to his left in the western part of the
city, but the biggest is the central orb tower straight ahead, and even though it's a way further off to the north, it still manages to rise above
every other building in sight.
To him though there's no distinction. Bigger and smaller buildings are the same thing. The sky isn't different to the ground, the trees, grass, his
fence, the sun, the birds flying past, himself. All part of the same flow of being, gathered here and all coming together to create the illusion of a
city just going through it's normal routine.
A simple combination of appearances, but he can perceive many others.
The surface atmosphere gives off a relaxed feeling, but further down there's something else building up, and it's been building up for a long time.
He can sometimes see signs of it as clearly as anyone else would see a car or a person pass by in the street. A whirl of energy off to one side, a
being that only one or two others in the city might be able to see if they concentrated hard enough. Symbols and shapes taking on form out of the
everyday arrangement of different parts of the scenery. Subtle signs hinting at what might be to come, or even of what's already starting to emerge
all around.
The orb has partly been built in order to point towards a new age, but it's been six years now since it's completion. It sometimes seems almost
irrelevant when it comes to the way that the myths and prophecies of it's time are acted out within the city, as if regardless of it's presence. But
the city was designed to attract the events going on in and around it, and somehow it will help to bring about the outcome. With our without myths,
prophecies, orbs and nanotechnology.
Taking another sip of his sake, the Sage looks up towards the central tower in the distance, and knows that beyond Humans and Animals, Vampires and
Khonsua, Demons and Elementals, others will soon arrive. Those that don't need fame or wealth, power to manipulate others with, strife or battle.
Those that will work quietly in the background to lead Protocity and it's inhabitants towards the turning point that it was always meant to
represent.
He smiles to himself, stands up, turns around and heads back towards his front door, and a small whirl of blue energy flashes in and out of his field
of vision just above him, as if in agreement with the thoughts that have just gone through his mind. Not long now, he thinks to himself, and maybe
everybody will be seeing what only a few at a time have been able to see all along.
