It's your cookies.
They are used by just about every site that knows anything about search engine optimization. They are used to track your habits in order to serve up
relevant content (including targeted ads) to make your life "simpler".
To avoid this, obviously, delete your cookies. Second, log out of Google, Yahoo or any other email program before browsing. Those logins stay active
and attach information to those user accounts.
I actually asked recently at an industry meeting about how the industry was going to track and target consumers once everyone figures out how to (or
the browser's automatically) delete their cookies and histories. No one had an answer and the assumption is that will never happen.
