Fact : Only Ten Members of Congress Known Today to Have Been Killed

* Sen. David Colbreth Broderick (D-Calif.) was killed on Sept. 16, 1859, in a duel.
* Sen. Edward Dickinson Baker (R-Ore.) was killed on Oct. 21, 1861, in a Civil war battle.
* Rep. Johnathan Cilley (D-Maine) was killed on Feb. 24, 1838, in a duel.
* Rep. Cornelius Springer Hamilton (R-Ohio) was killed on Dec. 22, 1867, by an insane son.
* Rep. James Hinds (R-Ark.) was assassinated on Oct. 22, 1868.
* Sen. Robert F. Kennedy (D-N.Y.) was assassinated on June 6, 1968.
* Sen. Huey Long (D-La.) was assassinated and died on Sept. 10, 1935.
* Rep. Spencer Darwin Pettis (D-Mo.) was killed on Aug. 28, 1931, in a duel.
* Rep. John McPherson Pinckney (D-Texas) was assaulted and killed on April 24, 1905.
* Rep. Leo J. Ryan (D-Calif.) died from gunshot wounds received while visiting an American religious commune in Guyana on Nov. 18, 1978.

I was just doing research into how common this type of even is, and how often it results in deaths. I was admittedly shocked to find out just how relatively safe a Congressional job is, compared to how public they must be and how often they are demonized by the average person.

I could not find any study on how many members of Congress have been assaulted.

I also came across these Federal Judges whom have been assassinated :

Richard Daronco
Robert Smith Vance
John H. Wood, JR. (Shot by the father of actor Woody Harrelson)

It is also noted that an assassin also killed the mother and husband of Joan Lefkow.

My only question is how many have died an untimely death due to "accidents" or "heart attacks" and things like that.

The Gov jobs may not seem so safe then.

Sen. David Colbreth Broderick, Rep. Johnathan Cilley and Rep. Spencer Darwin Pettis were kinda asking for it.

The site cites around 60 members that have died due to natural causes, plane crashes, and the likes. We all have our doubts about official stories, especially regarding more controversial persons. The point of this post is that there are a very small group of deceased that have been proven to be assassinated or otherwise killed.

In realizing this, we can couterract the media hype, and inform our local politicians of this fact so that there is no sense of fear amongst them. I have heard some people on this site hinting at the possibility that their elected officials will now seldom provide appearences in public forum. If we all play into the hype, and take our orders from DHS, this is the exact scenario we can best hope to realize.

Personally, I would rather inform my representatives to avoid such a scenario, and encourage you all to do the same. It may be hard to speak about or hear so soon after the event, but if it is not spoken about... what can we expect?

OK what about Vice Presidents ? How many ? A member of my family was a very short lived Vice President of the United States .Can you work out who he was ? I'll give you a clue , the first initial is L . There is also a County of the same name .I would be interested in what you can turn up .How many Americans a even aware that a vice president was Assasinated ?

I could find no evidence of Vice President Assassination Attempts.

wow...........a whole ten...........wonder how many people their actions killed.........1000s..........millions?

Ten hardly seems like a lot for all those killed or had their lives ruined, from the native americans to afganistan to the innocent people gunned down in the streets or jailed because of their stupid laws

10 dead... a lot of them in duels...

All those congress people are responsible for the death of at least 1.5 million people just in the last 10 years. One dead over 1.5 million dead they've ordered is a good ratio in the murderers hall of fame.

And not even one dead. Giffords didn't die... yet... but she may be brain damaged...

With the things they've been pulling, especially since 9/11, I'm more surprised that this didn't happen more often... I mean not even one Iraqi tried to kill congress people? Not even one Pakistani? Not even one Afghan? Really? That's good, but surprising nonetheless.

Watching Fox News at 4am, and they are currently trying to pin the shooting on an elevated hate toward government in America. I guess people forget there was a time when the hatred was so deep that people got pistols out and shot eachother over disagreements.

What is this world coming to. Is our entire history going down the memory hole?

They're talking about how we shouldn't say fascist, communist, nazi. Give me a break. If you were a socialist you would be shot in America.

No one of course, all day today, last night, and since the shooting for that matter, has seriously discussed that government really is out of control.

I would say the American people are extremely tame and timid compared to the days of this country's founding.
