Sheltered Earth, page 1

In the face of current massive deaths of animals and associated doom and conspiracy theories a question re-occured to me; isn't it the most astounding fact that such an intricate, complexely interdependent system, from tiniest microorganisms, plants, to biggest and most complex animals, every tiny agent contributing to the game, etc. was able to exist so long uninterrupted in its balance to develop self-conscious, thinking entity, that can function and survive in a very narrow range of conditions - a bit more or less heat, pressure, oxygen, any kind of radiation and we are toast - but it doesn't happen.

Earth seems to be perfectly sheltered while containing such a fragile system. Isn't this wierder than any doom, catastrophe scenario you could think of?

It is so easy and common to disrupt the conditions on cosmic levels (just look at the neighbour planets), but we seem to have this super protection of Earth. Perfect, hardly variable (from cosmic perspective) conditions and no fatal disruptions from the surrounding hostile Space.

Where do we get this certainty that the sun will not toast us the next second, because of a sudden change of conditions on a higher level, or the atmosphere and gravity suddenly stop working for many possible reasons, etc.

While I am against panic conspirationist fear mongering and doom theories (what can you do anyway if faced with the alleged inevitable end of the world? Just enjoy now, and what difference does it make for each individual anyway, when we know that we will die some day for certain...) I find it none the less very interesting and enquiery worthy why we have this dominant common certainty that we are perfectly sheltered and that this is normal and can be hardly disrupted? Wouldn't it be much more logical to think, knowing how fragile we and our habitat are and how immense, powerful and hostile to our existence the Space is, that we and the whole life on Earth or even the planet itself could be annihilated in any moment, and that the sheltered condition is odd and less normal and inviting questioning?

Sooo, where do we source this certainty from and isn't it most peculiar how life on Earth is sheltered for such long periods of time, that even we could get to where we are?
