Phone video captures SFPD shooting

www.liveleak.com

The San Francisco Police Department released this video of a man who was shot by officers at 10th and Howard and streets in the South of Market neighborhood on Tuesday, Jan. 4.

In witness' footage, man in a wheelchair, who allegedly stabbed an officer, appears to toss his knife before being shot. Chief Gascon says 'what is actually happening may be different.'

There has been a few out of order USA police shootings of recent (the blind wood carver springs to mind) but this clip I just saw on Liveleak takes the biscuit.
For heavens sake... what about tasers and the like???

I am so glad I live in the UK where the normal police don't have guns.

The USA is so scary. I have never been. A lot of it looks beautiful and would love to see the sights... but the stuff I see like this... and the TSA stuff terrifies me.

I hope and pray the UK doesn't become more like the USA.

Peace out ATS.

Can we talk about the incident without bringing nationality into it. Bad things happen everywhere, not just here you know.

maybe the cops did tase him before they shot him

the bum looks like he's holding his left arm, because they tased him? maybe they shot him in the arm?

when you have 10 cops pointing guns at you, you don't pull a knife.

because hes in a wheel chair means absolutely nothing

hey boom...

It happened in the USA... where loads of innocent people get shot killed by accident.
It doesn't happen in the UK.
It is country specific for me.
The USA is a scary place to do crimes.
Not that I do those now.

I like Americans... it's their Police State that gives me the jeebies.

Dude...

he's in a wheelchair...

he pulls a knife...

He's ten feet away.

It's not a magic knife.

You don't shoot him. For heaven's sake.

After watching the video, I probably would have shot him too. All kinds of people can be crazy not just cops, here in Washington, D.C there's always a cop or innocent person getting shot or killed around here. I live in a really bad neighborhood and I know just how crazy people can be.

Here is how we deal with wheelchair criminals in the UK.

Not pretty... but they don't get died.

Funny I just read another thread about a law that was passed in 3 states that ban video taping police....

Police State - Illegal to record on-duty police officers,

I can't help but wonder what the reasons would be supporting that law... As a citizen I can sure think of some reasons that appose that law. This article being one of them.

I think the point was the wheelchair guy not only was handicapped, but he threw his weapon like he was probably told. The news thing says he tossed it before being shot, to me also it appears that way. I do understand though it may not have been that way in reality, maybe the police didn't see that he threw it, or maybe it was just too late. Also, I think he did not pull the knife when the 10 cops came, he threw it, the reason the cops came was precisely that he had the knife and had stabbed an officer.

If you actually watch the video carefully, it sounds like they tased him and then the man in the wheelchair threw the knife, stabbing one of the officers who is getting first aid later in the video.

Watch and listen carefully, they shoot as he is throwing the knife, in order to try and stop him. The shots are in reaction to his action. And yes, a knife is considered a deadly weapon and is and should be met with like force.

Ideally you have an officer with a taser and an officer with a gun, so that you can try the unleathal method, but if it fails you have to go to leathal. It appears that is what happens. As terrible as it looks, I think it will determined to be a valid shooting.

I cannot agree or disagree as I was not there. But in my evaluation , its like chasing a guy whit his pants around the ankles. Knife or no knife a 200 lbs cop can take him without shooting. That's what happened in the older days and to the satisfaction of both the situation was taken care of. This stupid action \ reaction without thought sounds insane.A good policeman usually \should put himself in the same situation first and deal accordingly.

There is so much these cops have to deal with these days as the economy gets worse and more citizens become desperate. Honestly though, you can't compare the UK with the US in this regards - not while the average citizen has the right to carry.

The protocol the cops follow is pretty strait forward. If the subject is uncooperative, there's going to be a problem. If the subject pulls any kind of weapon, it's a done deal. Who knows what the knife is laced with or if this guy's got hep C or aids? These cops don't have to wrestle with someone if a knife is pulled. The cops want to go home to their families too.

With as many altercations that are on the books each day nationwide, a couple of incidents that go the wrong way aren't bad statistics.

Oh, and welcome to the wild west.

maybe UK cops should carry real weapons. I've been reading a lot lately that not only are the Guns in the UK but they are also getting used. I can think of three happenings of late.. bad snhit happens all the time not just in the U.S and your kidding with the hope the UK doesn't turn into the U.S comment right? I'm pretty sure the U.S started it after they saw how the UK bent over and took big brother.

I'm glad you paid attention to the video. I wasn't sure if anyone else noticed that the man receiving first-aide was an officer other than me. The guy who was shot was lying on the ground, probably cuffed already.

To everyone who thinks this was wrong: The cops used NON-LETHAL means to subdue the criminal. The shotgun was loaded with a "bean-bag" load, not a deadly load such as slug/buckshot. As for me, I would have used the pistol on him if he would have sliced me open... and where I live that is legal.
