EMM386

Ugh back for the third in in under a week.

I get this error message "EMM386 NOT INSTALLED" on startup. So I checked on the net for it and it says its a DOS file that allows more memory to be used or something like that. It said I need to install it using the device in config.sys. And I don't have any clue how to do that.

Help?

I have Windows 98SE.

Never upgraded to XP yet, I'm hoping too by December.

Should I reinstall Windows?

MS Knowledge Base says

1. Using any text editor (such as Notepad), open the Config.sys file.
2. Locate the line that loads Emm386.exe, and then remove the following text from the beginning of the line:

rem -- by Windows 98 setup -

3. Save and then close the Config.sys file.
4. Restart the computer.

Thats basicaly the only thing that I can find about maybe fixing the problem. You could maybe extract the contents of you 98SE disc and get the file, or...since you just reformatted, right?....you could reinstall.

Then I guess the above "fix" didnt work...

Are they really showing same file?
File should be viewable with any text "editor" (even DOS edit)



Check MSDOSDRV.TXT and CONFIG.TXT files in Windows directory, there's info about these (good old) DOS era's drivers.


HIMEM.SYS should be before EMM386.
And basing on what Wordpad showes its "start command" is missing.

Almost like from Win 98 system/boot floppy.

As regarding your problem, I suggest you to delete both - config.sys and autoexec.bat and use windows native drivers. Or better, use config.sys with shell=C:\Windows\Win.com
