The research suggests that scientists could eventually sequence an entire genome in a single lab procedure, whereas at present it can only be sequenced after being broken into pieces in a highly complex and time-consuming process. Fast and inexpensive genome sequencing could allow ordinary people to unlock the secrets of their own DNA, revealing their personal susceptibility to diseases such as Alzheimer's, diabetes and cancer.

I know it may still be within the range of 10 years before we are completely able to implement this new chip/Tech. though great strides are being made so that DNA decoding can be completed faster,this efficiency in it's self will be the incredible catalyst towards finding cures quicker.

finding new methods defined per the individual precisely all the way down to the building foundations of life as we "know" it and continue to explore to know is going to be amazing!
what I find most interesting of all, is the mention of the possibility with this new sequencing that will allow the common man/women to have Their actual genome decoded at an affordable price!

Since there is and has been natural cures and treatments for those three dis'eases, and many others,

I'm not so sure this sounds like good news.

Oxford Nanopore hopes to bring down both the cost and the time required for sequencing using a technique called nanopore sequencing.



The key to making the method work is controlling the flow of the bases through the protein pore. DNA bases are "too small to be identified on their own: they would fly through," says James Clarke, a scientist at Oxford Nanopore. So a sugar molecule lining the opening bulks it up so that the DNA doesn't zip through too rapidly.

I agree with what you say about natural cures for many ailments & diseases but until proven to be 100% effective and "true" is another thing to be said all together.And as far as being known/offered for the majority of society?
this can lead to major advances in treating more than just the three diseases you and the article mentioned.

Interesting stuff. At the moment pyrosequencing is the hot "new" thing, much faster than the Sanger method (dideoxy) that was introduced in late 70's or so. Not so sure this new method described is quite there yet. They can't actually sequence anything with it. Also it's impossible (atm anyways) to get intact DNA molecules larger than some 10kbp in size so it's not like they can just feed a sample to their miracle machine and be done with it. Sequences still need to be annotated and that takes considerable time. Of course it's more a software question, but with larger genomes quite a task..

Oh and I personally don't think that individual genome sequencing is required for diagnosis. What needs to be done is to identify all critical mutations in regard to diseases and just apply these to genechips. Then screens can be performed in matter of minutes. Such chips already exist. It's just that we haven't identified many critical mutations yet. For this many more GWAS are needed and there cheaper sequencing is a big bonus..

Amazing how this stuff progresses. I can imagine in the not so distant future that they might use nanobots that mimic the DNA Transcriptase to split the DNA and walk the line, sending back a digital radio signal for each base pair they encounter. A drop of blood wouold be all that is needed.

As for natural cures, believe me, I am a big follower of using non-pharma, however, this technology is a good thing to have anyway when trying to understand some of the more puzzling aspects to how life functions on this planet.
