Massive fish kill blankets Arkansas River

Arkansas officials are investigating the death of an estimated 100,000 fish in the state's northwest, but suspect disease was to blame, a state spokesman said Sunday.

Dead drum fish floated in the water and lined the banks of a 20-mile stretch of the Arkansas River near Ozark, about 125 miles northwest of Little Rock, said Keith Stephens of the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission. A tugboat operator discovered the fish kill Thursday night, and fisheries officials collected some of the dying animals to conduct tests.

Stephens said fish kills occur every year, but the size of the latest one

.....and speaking of Arkansas.

I'm a native - born and bred and I absolutely love my state. On any other ordinary day you'd call Arkansas an idyllic wildlife paradise and you'd be right. But it looks as if the new year bodes poorly for us. And drum is my favorite fish! haha. It is not yet known if the massive bird kill that just occured in Beebe, Ar. is connceted to this fish kill in Ozark - about 120 miles west. Regardless, I do not like this one bit.

Have you heard any reports of people getting sick locally? Or has it remained a wildlife problem so far.

You can bet the incidents are related. And, realizing they are related will be the key to figuring out what is going on. Of course someone knows, but they aren't saying. Did a corporation dump toxic chemicals? Did an earthquake break open some deadly gas reservoirs? Did a lab accident occur, releasing a genetically designed bio-weapon?

Is this the start of some crazy biological apocalypse? That's how it starts in the movies

Your link is wrong. It goes to a page here on ATS.

Same article on a page on CNN.

"The fish kill only affected one species of fish," he said. "If it was from a pollutant, it would have affected all of the fish, not just drum fish."

Sounds like a natural occurence rather than anything suspect. Perhaps a disease or parasite?

Hi there,
I find it suspicious that there is 1,000 plus birds dropping from the sky then this massive fish kill. Somewhere there must be a connection- there are no coincidences...
