Why has ATS gone down to a 4 hour window to edit a post?

We used to be given a longer time to edit our posts. I don't feel this is enough time to effectively re-evaluate what we post here on ATS.

12 hours like before would be a much nicer time window, so we can actually take a step back, then refine our OP or sometimes lengthy responses that contain errors.

You'd better be warned that the situation is even worse than it looks.
The message SAYS "4 hours", but the actual time allowed for editing starts the count-down at 120 minutes, which is only two hours in the rest of the world.
People have been mystified by/grumbling at the discrepancy for a couple of months now.

Ok then I am not going nuts.

I thought it was shorter than 4 hours, but your post just confirmed my thoughts.

Post Like You Mean It

I can't speak to the exact number of minutes, since that's up to our Magical Mystical Overlord to determine.

However, I can say that we have run into problems such as "edit trolling", where a member will post something truly obnoxious, then change it -- after making sure the "target" sees it, but before a mod sees it. Hilarity ensues.

Then there are the drama queens who decide "ATS was a mistake" and resolve to delete every post they've ever made.

While I suppose the "nights in white satin" mood is understandable, in the end it's best if we stand by our words, and ultimately that's what the "edit window" is about.

My advice: choose your words carefully, because eternity is the judge of us all.

That pretty much says it all, lol

I never thought about it from a troll standpoint, but that makes perfect sense.

It's always the Trolls faults, damn them.

This stood out to me. Why shouldnt people be able to change something they wrote if they dont want it to be read anymore? Im just curious.

I think there should only be a 45 minute frame personally. That's enough time to re-read, edit errors, and correct grammar (which is usually not done anyway).

Anything after that can be put in as an updated subpost (reply to your own OP) which would make it easier to understand some of the comments that are made before the correction. I know I am only able to check stuff once in a while, but some of the replies seem so far off topic, until I read the edit time stamps. Then I realize the OP changed their wording a little bit.

I use to be a MOD for different site a couple years ago, so I understand the complaints that can come into play from this kind of stuff.

What's the difference? It all belongs to 3 persons anyway. You'll be lucky if your work doesn't come back to haunt you in the zionist world anschluss.

I would like to hereby request the addition of many more emoticons, for emoting more emotional context at ATS. Thanks for the consideration. And from what I understand, they are very easy to add with this type of forum software. People would LOVE it!

I support this... even if it was posted in the wrong section.
