I ask because the last few times that I have logged in, I noticed that some of my messages are no longer highlighted in bold and I am sure that I have not read them previously.

No one else uses my lap top or could possibly have my passwords so I am wondering if moderators or anyone else on the site is able to read our messages.

Even if someone was able, I'm not sure why they would but I was curious nonetheless.

If anyone with server level access to your u2u's read them, they would remain highlighted. You wouldn't have any indication that it had been done. Is it possible that your account has been hacked/accessed by someone else? Check your posting history to make sure that there aren't any thread posts you did not make.

If the person who sent you a message opens their 'outbox' and re-reads the sent u2u, it loses the bold highlight in the recipient's inbox.

What about the tab under messages which allows us to see who has responded to our posts. Is there any way for these alerts to lose their bold appearance without having been read or clicked on by me?

I rarely use it. Perhaps visiting the thread containing the reply has the effect of removing the bold highlight in your messages folder?

Don't forget that access to your account isn't necessary to check your posts...your profile has that information for any member to see.

The mods are able to read your inbox. Or someone high up in this organization. I say this because I've had a couple of messages removed completely, one just after reading, I went to go back to read it again and it was gone. Another just before I read it, vanished.

I think they determined they were spam, although I would rather remove my own spam, and choose for myself.

You, the sender and ScepticOverlord, the owner of the site.

Don't worry. SO is not gonna read your u2u's. He's one of the people that actually has a life. ATS ia his work.

Boy.... I wish I could say I've made my hobby a job.

When they ban a spammer, the spammer outbox is deleted, which deletes all of that members messages from the whole system.

That makes sense.
I just hate seeing something, and then it's gone, just like those 404s.
Hate that. Frustrating. Makes me feel like I'm missing out if I don't see the whole thing.
An obsession I never grew out of.
