What direction in the sky did you happen to see this in? I ask because I live about 30 miles south of there, and I saw something very similar 2 nights
ago, around 7:30, towards the northeast. It was very strange, however I think what I saw may have been the ISS passing by.
It was an extremely bright light, traveling smoothly across the sky, not blinking at all like an airplane would. I watched it for about 20 seconds
before it just went out. At least that's what I assume it to have been, but I have seen something MUCH crazier than that.
On October 31st of this year, around a quarter after 6, just as the sun was going down, I was walking down the road. I happened to look towards the
west, and a very shiny object seemed to just, well, "fall" out of the sky, and then it seemed to stop just above the horizon. I watched for a minute
or two, it didn't move. Ran back into the house, grabbed the binoculars, came back out to get a closer look. When I looked through the binoculars, I
couldn't quite make out what the object was, but I then saw 3 black, military looking helicopters flying right towards it. I watched the helicopters
break formation, apparently trying to surround the object, but before they could it just took off. It was a strange sight to say the least.
So, yeah, there are some strange things that happen around here. And please, chinese lanterns? If you lived in these parts of WV, you would know
better. To the OP and brother, I say keep watching the skies, because whether it is extra-terrestrial or military, there are some interesting things
going on here.
