What is the deal with people who claim to be "97th-degree masons" or the like? I thought Freemasonry had 33 degrees. But every now and then I run across somebody claiming astronomical numbers of degrees, usually in the high 90s. Are they full of it or is this a real thing?

Just an FYI, this thread is over 10 years old and the poster you replied to hasn't been here since 2014 but I'll answer this.

Anything above the Scottish Rite 33rd is typically from a clandestine (not recognized by Regular Masonry) group called Memphis Mizraim which goes all the way to the 99nd degree. Regular Masonry has three degrees, the appendant bodies like the Scottish Rite have additional degrees which cover the same lessons but in the form of a play as opposed to actual candidate participation that would occur in the Blue Lodge.

OK thanks for the answer. I have heard of Memph. Misriam in connection with Italian history. From what little I know it's a long-defunct lodge that was once legit. If so, are you saying some LARPers have revived it and added a bunch of bogus degrees?

there was a guy here who claimed to be in that rite. He was knowledgeable and non dickish, but I can't remember his handle. We swapped gravy recipes, and apparently they don't use bacon when frying their "meal". I was not impressed.

what constitutes a High-Level Mason

One that has an understanding of the symbolism and ritual used and to know its true meaning. Thats why you seem like a lower level mason and someone like the great Albert Pike (although shunned by todays masonic teachings would be a high level mason.

Ritual is a great means for transversing information from era to era. But it works best if the mass of people that do it do not understand the information they are carrying (low level)

High level would be understanding all those ant masons are just the carriers and dont know the turth.

The Grand College of Rites maintains defunct degrees and is the only Masonic body authorized to exemplify the degrees of Memphis, Mizraim.

But then, there’s these guys. They’re active spurious orders and are not recognized by the UGLE:

Additionally, these orders practice magick, which is the biggest difference (besides regularity) between them and actual Freemasonry. Im assuming they’re a modern iteration of AMORC or OTO.

All of this would be really confusing for the majority of Masons, so I can understand how easy it would be for non Masons (especially anti-masons) to lump it all together.

I generally lean (no pun) toward the side of "complimentary masonictures".
