Until the end of the 1980s, our worlds could have come to an end at any time. It was the Cold War and the Nuclear Arms Race was bubbling away. 'Mutually Assured Destruction' was the stalking horse that helped to stop itchy fingers and scared leaders from hitting the button. Armageddon was on the horizon and all our Armed Forces drilled and trained to be able to react fast. It was to be the 'war to end all war' and most likely life as we know it would have ended in a 60 minute blitz of nuclear ICBMs.

Much of the 'civilised world' would look something like Pripyat (image source and credit) near Chernobyl...

In the UK, it was realised that a single aircraft on a suicide mission could fly from Eastern Europe and destroy London using a hydrogen bomb. They accepted that it was physically and realistically impossible to prevent. With this in mind, they had to accept that in the event of nuclear attack the best chance of survival was to retaliate immediately. By returning a massive attack, it was hoped that the Eastern Bloc enemies would suffer greater losses and be unable to finish the job properly.

While this was going on, an infrastructure of leadership would be needed to get Britain back on her feet in the nuclear winter that would be expected. They built underground nuclear bunkers to house the people necessary for Britain’s survival. They also had a number of ships that would support command structures and move by cover of night along the coastal ports of Scotland. This was called Operation Python and these ships would be hidden from enemy radar by the mountainous terrain. At the same time, specific politicians (Ministers) and military leaders were to be helicoptered away under the plans of Operation Visitation. They’d spend the rest of the war (days or months) secure in the underground location that was codenamed ‘Turnstile.’ This is a huge underground base that was decommissioned in 1992. It isn't much to look at from outside, but that's probably the idea...

Whilst I was reading about this, I started looking for photos of these underground bunkers. It’s the images that have caused me to write the thread. The insides of these vast complexes are depressing to look at. As I gaze, I imagine them bustling with life while outside millions have died and many more are about to. Population centres and strategic locations would be decimated. All nations have the same planning and policies. In the aftermath of 9/11 senior politicians and military leaders went underground for 3 months...

The chosen survivors of these terrible events weren’t allowed to take family with them. They’d flee the consequences of their actions and wait until it was safe to come back. I’m not much of a conspiracist and appreciate that individually, these guys would probably be fairly decent folk. On the other hand, the system that they represented and the politics that would have led to the deaths of all of us would get to live on in these bunkers. Deep down in the underground, Party politics and military might would be preserved from having to change. Its survival would be ensured despite the cost of millions of civilian lives…

As they picked up the pieces of a shattered world and tried to put it together again, they’d recreate it in the same image that went so horribly wrong in the first place. It’s a nightmare idea. The New World they helped to create would be their just desserts. Radiation, global winter and quite probably a flesh-eating zombie population with attitudes…

The world would be all gone to crap and they’d be welcome to it!

Given the alternatives available, it seems to me a quick death would be preferable to life under the ground or what would pass for life under the skies.

Millions of tons of trash!!!!! The trash left behind by people illegally crossing our borders is just another Environmental Disaster to hit the USA. If these actions had been done in one of our Northwest Forests or Seashore National Parks areas, there would be an uprising of the American people…..but this is the Arizona-Mexican border and northward. You won’t see these pictures on CNN, ABC, NBC or the Arizona Republic newspaper. Nor, will they mention the disease that comes from the uncovered human waste left in our desert. However, with respect to CNN, ABC & NBC, they do offer us “Special Reports” on cheating celebrity spouses….etc.

Some of those images and links are news to me and pretty interesting. Both sides were leaking information and yet the technologies used to monitor each other were quite distinct. The Woodpecker Array is an eyesore from a society that was less leaky than ours. I guess the late Soviet society had little access to the rest of the world and the Western society had too much? Our guys would need to be far more secretive than to construct something similar on the outskirts of major population centres.

All that stupidity and ball-swinging has only gone underground. The same old # is just diluted with sweetness and special offers.

Jeez, it's a depressing effect looking at the images.

I remember being fairly young child in the 80's being born 1974, and the looming threat of a nuclear war. It is amazing how close our leaders came to destroying a good chunk of the population. I wouldn't be at all surprised if Chernobyl brought reality back to what would happen if we had a nuclear war.

It would not surprise me if there ended up being another nuclear standoff between world powers in the not too distant future with the way things are progressing/regressing in the world today. I wonder if we would walk away from it this time without one side or the other "pushing the button."

The picture of the kindergarten and the one with the child's shoe made me wonder if a future generation would be looking back on nuclear war pictures that might look similar if we were to reach that point again and this time actually have leaders who "push the button".

Some of those images are horrifying to look ate the children swimming in the water with the trash all around them, at first look I thought they were dead bodies until I read what it said, and the young child collecting the scrap to sell was equally disturbing, but they do what they have to.

Well the sarcophagus at Chernobyl is falling apart. It was a temporary fix... so that problem looms again. They need a cover that will out last the pyramids... its not going away anytime soon. I would strongly recommend you watch those two Chernobyl documentaries in my other thread. Especially the return inside

What are they doing about it? Well TEPCO has plans... but each plan has an excuse

I was thinking about the whole Japan incident when I was typing my earlier reply but I was focusing more on the nuclear war part in my response.

I don't remember where I read it but it was mentioned somewhere that every nuclear power plant has the possibility of becoming the disaster as the ones in Japan because the safeguards not being in place the way they should have been all over the place. Supposedly they are all rushing to get them under control before they meet the same fate. As you showed there is already another one that is suffering problems.

Are these the same ones once it shows you have too much radiation, it is already to late?

I hate to think of the doomsday scenarios, but of all of them, this is the one that I think I actually fear the most.
