Wikileaks cables show Sri Lankan 'human right abuses'

US diplomatic cables newly released by Wikileaks are sharply critical of both the Sri Lankan government and the now defeated Tamil Tiger rebels.

The cables dating from 2007 suggest that the state colluded in paramilitary activities including killings, child trafficking and organised prostitution.

Meanwhile, the Tamil Tigers used systematic forced conscription during the war, which ended in 2009.

The cables are some of 2,000 released by whistle-blowing website Wikileaks

These cables the more recent dated last January draw a ugly picture of conscription were one member of each family must join the military and family's where threatened if they didn't bring relatives home to fight that were working over seas.

The Child trafficking by a government is the worst allegation yet IMHO. How can there government do this to there own people? This should have drawn international condemnation and investigation.

This would be a good reason to invade a country and to take out there government if it was proven that they are in fact doing this to children.

So many wasted wars.

Wars over oil, over drugs, over money, over control. No wars were ever fought to protect children. How pathetic is that?

We need to get the human garbage who are currently occupying our halls of power out of power

Well then you would have to also implicate many *other* governments.

It's just a fact that many Middle Eastern countries allow, and have protocols set up for the hiring of Sri Lankan children as household workers. I have witnessed this first-hand, and I have expressed extreme dislike for the practice, but how is one person going to influence the governance and culture of another country?

I am by no means including sex, and prostitution (as far as I know) in the instance of household workers, but it seems very wrong compared to common US/Western child labor-laws.

In my experience, it is not only the governments, but also the families of these children who are culpable. They were paid, but not nearly compensated as much as they should have been. "Sharomi" (I will call her) begged me to take her to the US with me, and I certainly would have if I could have.

You can blame Sri Lanka et al. but you must also blame other countries who partake/buy into this practice, and the children's families as well....
