one thing i just realized i forgot to add is that NOT all COUPE D"ETAT is bad...
sometimes, government is so bat sh.t crazy that the citizenship or a military leader must over through the corrupt virulent government.... This can be open display of a coup and can be a good thing...
What I am talking about is a secret, silent coup d'etat!, likes of which President Kennedy was talking about. A slow take over/corruption of the fabric of our social and politcial insitituions, such as military, government, media, education... etc silently by a secretive organizations which uses bribes and intimidations rather than an open take over of a government....

About Kennedy and his famous speech. Here is the full script. Read it. Look at the date. This speech was made a few days after the Bay of Pigs invasion. Find here basic consensual information on it.
After the failed invasion, the American press very heavily criticized the governement and the CIA. In front of a press syndicate, Kennedy gives this speech. In paragraph I, he starts explaining how he despises "secrecy' in a free society and how freedom of information is one of the foundations of our societies. Then he goes on and asks the press to show responsability and to stop informing the public in the name of higher means. Because it threatens national security and strenghtens the socialist revolution ideals and the USSR.
Read the speech again in the light of the context (remember the date) and form your own opinion.
But one thing is for sure, the quotes taken from this speech, the meaning attached to it that circulates on thousand of videos and articles in the internet are a perpetuated and copied myth.
On Reagan's speech, it's unusual, that's right. Now how to interpret his words ? It could be a simple goodwill speech using a strong and impressive metaphor. With the words only, how can we find more into it ?
Back on topic, I agree with you saabacura that we may not know of a successful coup d'état. Ideally, you want to seize power unopposed and if nobody or only a few know where the head is, nobody can cut it.
Out of curiosity, what is this country you are talking about in the OP ? Don't answer if my question is too intrusive
