Urgent. Pandemonium on Capitol Hill S.510 Food Safety Bill, HR3082 In Trouble

I haven't been able to find a link to this on Fox news. It was posted on RMN and I thought it was worth passing it on. The original email was sent by Betty Martini, the anti-Aspartame campaigner.

Fox news just reported “pandemonium” on Capital Hill regarding the 1900+ page Omnibus package (HR 3082) that enables government spending into the next year. They want to pass it by Saturday, but some senators are furious. This is the same bill that contains the S. 510 Food Safety bill, and numerous earmarks. Call your Senators today and help feed their fury – ask them to remove S. 510 (aka Food Safety bill) from this package. It hurts farmers and consumers by squeezing out small farms and exposing consumers to more industrial farming where problems originate.

The bill will pass because Reid is considering keeping the Senators in session through the holidays. The Senators will pass it simply out of concern that they might miss some 228 days off

Good post wcitizen, these bills need to fail!

I emailed my senators on this a few weeks ago. Not that one email matters, but I did see that it had alreadly passed in the senate that week, and was set to go to the house, now it's in another bigger bill? Maybe it always was, I did not read everything on this.

Thing is, you can email, call, fax your senator, they won't listen to you, they will do whatever the hell they want.

I'm jaded of course, even though I still try in the name of democracy.

Thank you for writing to me with your concerns about how new food safety legislation might affect small and organic farms.



As you may know, on November 30, 2010, the Senate passed the FDA Food Safety Modernization Act (S.510) by a vote of 73 to 25. You will be pleased to know that the bill included an amendment authored by Senator Jon Tester to protect small farms. Small farms that sell directly to consumers and make less than $500,000 in annual sales would be exempt from the new food safety requirements. In addition, the bill includes measures to provide training, technical assistance, and competitive grants to help small businesses implement new regulations. S.510 also contains specific language that protects and prevents conflict with national organic standards.



This legislation has strong bipartisan support and would improve the safety of the nation's food supply and help protect consumers from outbreaks of food-borne illness. Because S.510 would require farmers and producers to meet new food safety regulations, I recognize that fulfilling these new requirements could be more difficult for small farms than for larger operations.



As a long-time advocate of California agriculture and small family farms, I am proud to continue my efforts to ensure that new food safety reform is mindful of the diverse agricultural industry in our state. Please know that I will keep working to help small and organic farms grow and succeed while ensuring the safety of our nation's food supply.

The amendment works as long as you can provide 3 YEARS worth of financial information to prove you do not make more that $500,000 a year. Not to mention the fact that it's not $500,000 in PROFIT, but $500,000 in general. I know my share of farmers, and even "small" farms can spend $500,000 in a year. Just because you spend that much doesn't mean you make that much.
